In late October, our Carpe Data team transformed our Santa Barbara office into a warm, bustling, family-friendly community space in support of the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation. Over the course of one week, coworkers, friends, families, and local community members came together to help raise $5,205 in support of local families facing pediatric cancer.

At the heart of the event was a lively silent auction and raffle. Tables were filled with Santa Barbara-made goods, curated baskets, and local experiences, all displayed so guests could wander, browse, and bid at their own pace. Throughout the evening, people scanned QR codes to place their online bids, kept an eye on their favorite items, and outbid one another with plenty of friendly competition and laughter.

To keep everyone well-fed and having fun, we featured a personalized wood-fired pizza station hosted by Carpe Data team members, where guests could build their own creations and watch them bake. Nearby, generous charcuterie boards and a dessert station gave people even more reasons to graze, mingle, and linger in conversation. The space was filled with the smell of pizza, the sound of a custom jazz playlist, and bartenders pouring donated local beer and wine. Carpe kids helped draw raffle tickets, adding a joyful and heartwarming touch to some of the night’s most anticipated moments.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who attended, participated, and helped make this fundraiser so special.

A special thank you to our local donors and community partners whose contributions made the auction and raffle such a success. We are also incredibly thankful for the amazing team at the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation and the work you do every day to support and uplift children and families in our community. It was an honor to partner with you, and we are grateful to have played a small part in furthering your mission.

The Data & Analytics track at ITC Vegas 2025 drew a bustling room for a straight-talking session on injury claims. On stage were Max Drucker, CEO of Carpe Data; Pranay Mittal, who leads Travelers Investigative Services; and Erik Roen, Senior Vice President & CIO: Claim, who oversees technology, analytics, and strategy across Travelers’ claim organization. The conversation centered on keeping pace with heavy workloads, rising fraud risk, and fast-moving tech, while never losing sight of the core principle: taking care of customers without taking care of fraudsters.

Talent in a changing industry

The panel did not sugarcoat the staffing reality. Experienced professionals are retiring and while the promise of AI is alluring to some, Travelers has chosen to invest even further in their people: clearer career paths, a continuous learning mindset, and coaching that helps claim professionals grow in a digital-first setting. The aim is practical and keeps expertise in the chair while building the next generation of experts who can work confidently with modern data and systems.

That also means equipping managers with coaching tools that reinforce the right behaviors like monitoring utilization so they know which tools are used appropriately and which require additional training; all while keeping foundational investigative steps in place, whether the signal comes from data or conventional methods.

Technology that fits the work, not the other way around

Roen argued for a loosely coupled tech ecosystem that lets new capabilities slot into workflow without showering adjusters with shiny tools they will not adopt. Fit and timing are the first and biggest wins. Put the right information in front of the right person at the moment of need. The second win is the people side. Up-skilling and manager coaching drive adoption, speed decisions, and free teams to focus on value-add activities.

Measuring the benefit, not just the tool

Travelers once relied on manual social media checks for online investigations (in fact, they were among the first of major US insurers to do so). Today, they integrate a wide set of publicly available data sources in automated ways, with smarter searching, ongoing monitoring, and resolution strategies that surface the right signals at the right time. Roen called Travelers a trailblazer here, but emphasized that success came from discipline; It is less about one clever search and more about how information flows through the process.

Roen described this discipline as part of their test-and-learn culture grounded in design of experiments. Control groups and test groups help quantify lift, a practice they have refined over roughly 15 years dating back to early predictive models. Mittal added that benefit realization should be judged across the full data picture, not one tool at a time. Holistic measurement prevents false signals and keeps investments tied to results.

Automation, agentic AI, and the human in the loop

Manual investigations on their own are not scalable, on this the panel agreed, and they expect agentic AI to keep growing especially in triage and summarization. Even so, data are messy and judgment matters. Human review ensures explainability and holds the line on the core objective to pay what is owed. The next push is making the flood of information truly actionable and efficient, so teams move faster without sacrificing quality.

Travelers works with specialists like Carpe Data for more than fraud hunting. The first goal is verification of facts related to a claim. Roen framed it as a strategic choice, allowing carriers to focus on their core processes and ecosystem while letting partners build and maintain specialized capabilities that would be costly and slow to replicate in-house.

What this means for carriers right now

 1. Treat online data as evidence that moves the file.
 2. Integrate new capabilities into the workflow you already trust.
 3. Upskill teams and coach managers so adoption sticks.
 4. Measure lift with controls and keep your eye on total program impact.
 5. Use partners to verify facts at speed while your people focus on judgment and defensibility.

The session closed with a unifying message; claims leaders and their teams don’t need a pile of fragmented tools or UIs. They need a unified system that gets the right evidence to the right person at the right moment, with clear measures of value and a culture that keeps learning. That is how insurers can scale operations on massive injury claim inventories while staying true to the promises made to their insureds.

E&S carriers gain instant, explainable risk signals inside Harbor.ai’s underwriting workflow, helping teams price accurately and refine their underwriting strategy with precision and confidence.

Santa Barbara, Calif., October 14, 2025 [BusinessWire] – Carpe Data, a leading provider of next-generation data solutions for the insurance industry, and Harbor.ai, an underwriting platform that applies AI to complex insurance workflows, announced a partnership that helps excess and surplus (E&S) insurers act decisively on hard-to-place risks. The collaboration boosts speed with smart rules and scores that raise flow without adding loss volatility, as well as at-scale renewal monitoring for clean, profitable retention. The partnership also provides customers with industry-leading accuracy by leveraging pricing recommendations that sharpen technical adequacy and targeted exclusions that curb severity on complex risks. These benefits are all delivered within the day-to-day underwriting workflow, allowing E&S insurers to take quick action.

The joint approach keeps the underwriter in the driver’s seat; Carpe Data contributes operational characteristics, location and index signals, and book-level monitoring that flags late-emerging exposures. Harbor.ai delivers these insights at the right step in the workflow through its platform, reducing swivel-chair effort and enabling consistent, file-ready decisions across large inventories. Together, they help carriers raise flow on in-appetite accounts, support account-level price decisions, recommend appropriate exclusions on complex risks, and run renewal checks across portfolios without additional resources.

“E&S premiums grew to more than $80 billion in 2024, fueling intense competition where being first to quote often wins,” said Max Drucker, CEO of Carpe Data. “Speed is essential, but submissions can be messy and hard to place. Harbor.ai closes that gap with a clear, pragmatic workflow that keeps the underwriter in control. With Carpe Data’s evidence-based signals inside Harbor.ai’s platform, their customers segment and price faster for swift, confident decisions.”

“Carpe Data brings real-world business signals that E&S underwriters can act on in minutes,” said Paul Gaglioti, CEO of Harbor.ai. “With these insights embedded directly in our platform, our customers can cut down on manual web searches, segment more cleanly, and push the right accounts forward while holding complex risks for review. It is a direct lift for underwriters, actuaries, and wholesale partners who need clarity in minutes, not days.” As a result, E&S carriers and MGAs gain higher flow and cleaner, explainable pricing decisions across difficult classes. Wholesale brokers get quicker clarity for tough placements and more complete submissions to carriers, while actuarial and pricing teams receive consistent, audit-ready inputs tied to real business activity, improving model performance and renewal strategy.

]]>
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Carpe Data, a leading provider of next-generation data solutions for the insurance industry, today released its 2025 Online Fraud Insights report, analyzing the top locations, demographics, and tactics for insurance claims fraud in the United States. The report found that injury fraud thrives in areas where strong legal networks, high population density, heavy tourism, economic hardship, and legal loopholes create opportunities for fraudulent claims to flourish. The findings highlight the most common ways insurers uncover contradictory evidence, including through online channels such as social media, local news, and public records.

This report analyzes Carpe Data’s findings from 2024, based on continuous monitoring of open injury claims across auto, workers’ comp, general liability, and disability lines. This quantitative data analysis, paired with qualitative insights from internal subject matter experts, identifies trends, patterns, and anomalies in fraudulent behavior related to injury claims.

Key Findings

Carpe Data’s new data analysis uncovered the following key findings:

 • Disability, Workers’ Comp, and Auto lines uncover the highest rates of contradictory evidence online. 8.9% of disability claimants were found to have misrepresented their claim, compared to 6.9% of workers comp claims and 5.7% of auto claims.
 • 35% of all fraud referrals occur in the first two months. The early spike shows the power of continuous monitoring in two ways. First, claimants often make their most revealing online updates before the traditional fraud detection process ever kicks in. Second, there are limits of static investigations. If a carrier relies solely on point-in-time checks, they’ll miss the moment when evidence is most visible.
 • Younger claimants, between 18-24, are more likely to fraudulently claim injury. Carpe Data found this age demographic is far more likely to trigger physical activity and unlawful activity-related flags than people over 35. This is likely due to riskier behaviors and cultural pressure to overshare on social media channels.

“Many individuals committing fraud don’t see themselves as criminals – they’re often led to believe they’re simply maximizing their claims,” explains Tom Rasmussen, VP of Claims Product at Carpe Data. “Unfortunately, professional injury attorneys who know how to exploit legal loopholes are coaching claimants into exaggerating their injuries, sometimes without them fully realizing the consequences. The reality is, what starts as a small embellishment can quickly turn into fraud, benefitting attorneys who take a cut while leaving claimants to face the legal fallout.”

Every undetected fraudulent injury claim drains thousands from insurers, yet traditional fraud detection methods barely scratch the surface, typically analyzing just 5% of open injury claims. AI-driven fraud detection tools can scale claim analysis to 100% and identify inconsistencies more efficiently. Carpe Data’s AI-powered Online Injury Alerts & Investigative Reports help carriers spot fraud faster, reduce attorney-driven inflation, and automate key aspects of the claims cycle. By synthesizing data-driven findings and behavioral analysis, Carpe Data provides insurers insight on fraudulent activity and offers targeted recommendations for fraud detection and prevention efforts.

Thanks to a partnership with Carpe Data, one of the Top 10 US auto insurers gathered evidence disproving the claimants’ assertions that they were seriously injured in the accident, paving the way for the insurer’s attorneys to obtain a favorable trial verdict and saving the insurer $500,000 in damages.

____________

The Case:

A team of claim handlers at one of the largest auto insurers in the US combined advanced data analytics and investigative savvy to put the brakes on two claimants who exaggerated the extent of their injuries after being in an accident with one of the company’s customers.

The accident occurred at a busy intersection when the claimants’ vehicle, which was traveling in a bus- only lane, struck an insured customer’s car, which was turning left. An accident reconstructionist and biomechanics expert concluded that the facts of the loss did not support the occurrence of significant
injuries. However, the claimants alleged they sustained back, neck and other injuries, and both sought medical treatment over multiple years.

“The favorable outcome in this case highlights the value of partnering with Carpe Data to prevent bad actors from taking advantage of our company and our customers.”

– Senior Claim Executive, Top 10 US Auto Insurer

The Strategy:

A team of claim handlers and managers at the insurer held roundtable discussions about the case. The team’s jurisdictional knowledge and familiarity with the claimant attorney’s legal tactics, along with supporting intel gathered through internal analytics tools, enabled them to develop a sound defense
plan. But the real breakthrough came when Carpe Data’s sophisticated social media mining capabilities uncovered online posts containing videos and photos that contradicted the claimants’ deposition statements.

Carpe Data’s Online Injury Alerts showed one claimant lifting weights, doing pushups, squatting and engaging in other high-intensity activities in several videos. Similarly, Carpe Data uncovered additional evidence contradicting the second claimant’s testimony that he sustained facial lacerations. Additionally, an orthopedic independent medical examiner (IME) opined that both claimants only sustained minor soft tissue injuries in the accident and that most, if not all, of their medical care was unwarranted.

The social media posts discovered through Carpe Data, along with the IME opinion, marked the end of the road for the claimants. During the trial, the insurer’s attorneys walked through each of the relevant posts. The claimants admitted to having been untruthful about their injuries during their testimony, impeaching themselves in front of the jury, which rendered an 11-1 verdict in favor of the insurer and their customer.

The Results:

The favorable verdict prevented the insurer from having to pay $500,000 in damages sought by the claimants’ counsel, and the insurer was able to pursue the claimants for legal costs and fees resulting from the bogus claims— somewhere between $25,000 and $50,000.

A Senior Claim Executive from the insurer stated: “The favorable outcome in this case highlights the value of partnering with Carpe Data to prevent bad actors from taking advantage of our company and our customers.”

]]>
At InsurTech Connect Vegas 2024, Matt Murphy, Vice President of SIU Anti-Fraud Programs at The Hartford and Board Chair for the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), and Tom Rasmussen, VP of Claims Product at Carpe Data, discussed the evolving landscape of insurance fraud detection and prevention. Their discussion covered the history of fraud, the role of technology in upending traditional fraud detection methods, and the industry’s collaborative efforts to combat a problem that costs carriers and policyholders hundreds of billions annually.

The Growing Challenge of Insurance Fraud

Matt Murphy began by recounting his early days in the industry during the 1980s, when fraud detection relied on rudimentary tools like post-it notes and basic investigative techniques. Murphy highlighted how insurance fraud has evolved from individual schemes to more organized, sophisticated networks that operate both domestically and internationally. These networks are adept at shifting tactics to target different areas of insurance as they find vulnerabilities in claims and underwriting processes. “Fraudsters are like water; they flow to where the money is,” Murphy said.

Organized crime rings have become increasingly prevalent, using offshore actors and complex schemes that move from one insurer to another, exploiting the industry’s fragmented data systems. Murphy stressed the need for collaborative efforts to combat these rings, citing the importance of organizations like the NICB and the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud, which facilitate data sharing among insurers. “It’s a $308 billion problem per year for the U.S. economy,” he noted, likening it to the financial impact of several catastrophic natural disasters occurring annually.

The Role of Technology in Fraud Detection

A key theme of the discussion was the role of technology in both enabling and combating fraud. Murphy explained how advances in analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) have transformed the industry’s approach to fraud detection. In the past, claims handlers might have unknowingly handled multiple fraudulent claims from the same actors. Today, AI and data analytics allow insurers to detect patterns and connections that would have been missed before.

One of the most significant challenges Murphy identified was the rise of “low-touch and no-touch workflows” enabled by AI. While these technologies have streamlined claim processing, they also provide new opportunities for fraudsters. He described how fraudsters test insurers’ systems by submitting numerous low-value claims to see which ones get paid. “It’s a phishing expedition,” Murphy said, explaining how bad actors learn the workflows and then flood the system with fraudulent claims.

Tom Rasmussen added that companies like Carpe Data are working to provide insurers with third-party data to enhance fraud detection. By integrating external data sources into analytics platforms, insurers can better understand who they are insuring and detect inconsistencies that could indicate fraud. “The more data you layer, the closer you get to resolving an entity,” Rasmussen noted.

Collaboration and Information Sharing

The conversation also touched on the importance of collaboration within the industry. While SIU teams at different insurers are often competitors in the marketplace, they work closely together to share intelligence and fight fraud. Murphy emphasized the need for more streamlined information sharing, especially in light of increasing regulatory and privacy concerns. “It’s a strength and a weakness,” he said, referring to the challenges of balancing collaboration with legal and privacy restrictions.

Despite these challenges, Murphy remains optimistic about the future. The industry is moving towards more secure, cloud-based solutions where data can be analyzed without leaving insurers’ environments. This approach helps mitigate privacy concerns while allowing for effective fraud detection.

The Future of Fraud Detection

Looking ahead, both Murphy and Rasmussen agreed that the future of fraud detection will rely heavily on AI and other emerging technologies. Murphy outlined how AI could streamline investigative processes by summarizing claim files, highlighting inconsistencies, and even generating reports based on evidence gathered from multiple sources. However, he also warned that fraudsters are leveraging the same technology, using AI to generate fake documents and even clone voices to deceive insurers.

As fraudsters continue to adapt, the insurance industry must stay one step ahead. Murphy described it as a “cat and mouse game,” but one that the industry is increasingly equipped to win through technological innovation and cross-industry collaboration.

Key Takeaways

 1. Fraud is a massive and evolving problem: Insurance fraud costs the U.S. $308 billion annually, with organized crime rings increasingly targeting the industry.
 2. Technology is both a tool and a threat: AI and data analytics have revolutionized fraud detection, but they also provide new opportunities for fraudsters.
 3. Collaboration is essential: Insurers must work together to share data and intelligence, despite regulatory and privacy challenges.
 4. AI will play a critical role in the future: From identifying fraud to streamlining investigations, AI is set to transform how insurers combat fraud.

As the industry continues to evolve, insurers must remain vigilant, embracing new technologies while fostering collaboration to stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated fraudsters.
