I adopted to digital a while ago and cannot agree more with your take on Instagram (I left all of Meta last year) and joined a service called Glass and absolutely love browsing the photographers I follow there and discovering new ones. It’s a great community of photographers.
All the best to you.

What a painstaking process. It could probably (mostly) be automated, but I’m glad it isn’t. Such love and care—and a beautiful, handmade outcome!

Now I just assume that it will be worse than what we already have. Sure, better at making profit, but worse at being useful to everyday people.

Constantly learning new things (when we don’t have a say in when it happens) means that we never have time to master what we use day in and day out. If there’s no good reason for a button to change location, just leave it be.

tf thank you for sharing this. I’ve listened to that interview in the past. BW and color are indeed _very_ different.

I think Tony on Mastodon really nailed it in his response to me… it is about the feel of the camera. And to me, the iPhone isn’t anywhere near as good as a modern digital camera yet. But, aside from that, I prefer to use a camera body.

Thanks again for stopping by and sharing your perspective.

So I think for the purposes you describe a X100nn would be a good pick. Better than a GFX, I’d guess! (That’s gotta be larger and heavier…) A second hand XT with the 27mm would be another option.

Not that I’ve used any of the cameras discussed! I only have film… I do send my occasional C41 out for dev/scan, and E6 out for dev-only. Depends on price/turnaround, I suppose. I have quick, well priced UK options for both of those.

Comment on Thinking about my use of color film by tf https://cdevroe.com/2025/02/12/thinking-about-my-use-of-color-film/#comment-152 Thu, 13 Feb 2025 14:15:17 +0000 https://cdevroe.com/2025/02/12/thinking-about-my-use-of-color-film/#comment-152 For me there are two kinds of photographs I take: there are the self-documentary ones (holiday snaps and such), the purpose of which is to record something, and there are the self-expressive ones, that are less about capturing something out there and more about communicating something from within. I have now come to the realisation that the former no longer requires a camera, but merely a phone; my excellent digital camera is gathering dust because it can’t offer me anything the phone can’t for this type of a phtotograph, destined for a screen of some sort. The other, expressive, photography, requires a more concerted and deliberate effort, and an equipment to match, and for me that has become B&W imagery and film. I did for a while try to shoot at least the occasional colour film during the autumn, but come to realise it doesn’t work for me. B&W and colour need a whole different way of thinking and working, and I can’t do both well at the same time. I first thought it was just me, and so was rather taken aback by Clyde Butcher’s blunt assertion on the Matt Payne pocast that nobody can do both well, they are just too different; it’s worth reflecting on. But the two overriding questions for me are (a) what is I am after here, and (b) does it bring me joy? The rest are implementational details, and in constant flux. (The Butcher interview is rather entertaining, and well worth a listen, if you havn’t hear it, https://www.mattpaynephotography.com/gallery/photographing-the-florida-swamps/)

Thanks for stopping by Jack. The Zf looks fun. I was going back and forth on wanting lenses – but I suppose I should? So maybe the XT series for me?

My thought on having a fixed lens is that it truly would be grab and go.

Or similar, anyway. I rarely shoot color film, but I’ve been almost exclusively been shooting black and white. Almost no digital. My hit rate from a manual rangefinder is pretty good, but it takes /work/. I was thinking of something fun to carry around, and save film for “serious” work (portraits, etc.) I tried taking my original Fuji X100 out, but it’s just so slow to use. Started shopping for an X100VI, but ended up just today buying a Nikon Zf. I really wanted full frame and interchangeable lenses are a bonus. Plus, the autofocus is just so fast! (The guts are from the Z8).

Anyway, yes, digital for color snapshots seems like a good idea to me today too :), which ever camera you choose.
