Comment on What’s going to happen at COP30? by dfhunter https://cliscep.com/2025/02/08/whats-going-to-happen-at-cop30/#comment-165765 Sun, 22 Mar 2026 00:28:05 +0000 http://cliscep.com/?p=62335#comment-165765 Mark – from your https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/jan/11/australia-cop31-chris-bowen-fossil-fuel-phaseout link

“Bowen’s comments follow a direct appeal from the former US secretary of state John Kerry for Australia to actively push the world’s big emitters – including China, Russia, the US and India – to develop a roadmap to end the era of fossil fuels.”

Just look what the Iran war & the disruption to “fossil fuels” shipping thru the straits of hormuz is having on UK/world markets (US not included).

But I’m sure talk the talk beats reality.

Comment on What’s going to happen at COP30? by Mark Hodgson https://cliscep.com/2025/02/08/whats-going-to-happen-at-cop30/#comment-165762 Sat, 21 Mar 2026 20:37:10 +0000 http://cliscep.com/?p=62335#comment-165762 “£800,000 The staggering bill for Miliband’s green summit jaunt to Brazil… funded by British taxpayers”

https://www.pressreader.com/article/281784225617794

TAXPAYERS spent more than £800,000 on a trip by Ed Miliband and his team to the UN climate summit.Figures reveal that 73 delegates from the UK attended COP30 in Brazil last autumn, led by Labour’s Energy Secretary. Their plane travel alone cost the public £210,450, with thousands more spent on carbon credits to offset emissions. And they spent a staggering £600,740 renting private apartments during the two-week conference because hotel prices had been hiked in host city Belem.Another £28,025 was spent on miscellaneous expenses by the delegation, but the total cost will be higher as 13 of them have not yet put their expense claims in.Keir Starmer and a team from No10 also went on a whistlestop trip to the summit, but those costs have yet to be published.Mr Miliband is already facing criticism for refusing to help ease Britain’s sky-high energy costs – rocketing further as a result of the war in the Middle East – by allowing new drilling for oil and gas under the North Sea.The COP30 summit was also branded a waste of time and money by some because it was boycotted by leaders from three of the world’s biggest emitters – the US, China and India – while the final text did not mention a commitment to phase out fossil fuels.

“‘It was our little idyll – until the solar farm landed’: the battle raging in the heart of the British countryside”

And there’s hardly room for another endnote, so I’ll leave it as it is. But many thanks for the useful data.

Fair enough. Maybe just squeeze in the “over 6000” to give the scale? It’s always tricky keeping things concise while packing in as much info as possible – you’ve done a great job!

John C,

Yes, with hindsight, I’m sure there are many major industries which wish they had spent some effort informing the general public. That would have given some perspective on their value to society which would provide some counterbalance to the relentless mud-slinging by the media et al.

I’ve worked with petrochem, nuclear and the water industry, amongst others. All had their faults but they were overwhelmingly decent folk trying to do a good job. Now it’s too late, of course.

So I think I’ll substitute ‘pesticides’ for ‘insecticides’ as recommended by Jit – unless there’s anything that’s crying out for change.

for the species’ survival

Not to split hairs, but it’s not a species, it’s a subspecies. Even were the migratory subspecies to go extinct – and that would be a terrible loss – there is no danger to the species as a whole, which is found in a lot of other places, without the annual migration.
