Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek needs a new Treasurer to:

 • set up payments online and get approval from a second signatory
 • gather and keep evidence of all receipts and payments
 • administer our bank accounts (Charity, Instant Access & Notice Savings)
 • liaise with our payroll accountants and pay employees, HMRC and Nest
 • issue regular reports for Kowethas, Rosweyth and REVIVE (three-year EU Horizon funded project)
 • issue financial reports at year end for the whole CIO and Kowethas
 • present the financial report at the AGM (in early February)
 • advise on budgeting and answer financial queries

All of which takes half a day a week on average, but more at month and year end. Meetings are held largely in Cornish so this is chance to speak and hear more Cornish. This is a voluntary role supporting Cornish Language events, book sales and publications and more. Please contact us to find out more and to apply at: [email protected]

Please share this with your friends. Thank you!

Report by Lianne Wilson, Publications Officer.

The current subcommittee comprises myself (trustee, chair), Davyth Fear, Emma Jenkin, Loveday Jenkin, Robin McCarthy and Sam Ruane-Brown. I’d like to personally thank them for their hard work.

The Subcommittee is open to anyone with an interest in driving the work we do, especially those with skills or knowledge in publishing. We meet approximately monthly on a Sunday evening.

Publications This Year

 • Gwedrow-Mires (bilingual poetry) – 34 sold
 • Gwari Ger Kernewek (puzzles) – 38 sold
 • Dres an Vledhen hag An Teylu Banalek (graded reader/workbook) – 50 sold
 • Dons Men (trilingual poetry) – new release

Republications This Year

 • Hwedhlow a-dhiworth an Orsedh (short stories and non-fiction) – new release

Sales

Nov 2024-Oct 2025’s reports showed book sales increasing by 18%, with costs also decreasing from £20k to £12k. This is due in large part to our move to Print on Demand, facilitated by Lulu, ceasing upfront printing costs and needing minimal storage.

The Kowethas Co-ordinator has found the Print on Demand system to be very effective and easy to manage, as well as being generally well-received by our customers. Further, this allows us to publish books without worrying about selling at high volume. We will be looking at ways to implement this benefit in future, further increasing the variety of books sold.

Book sales were fairly well-distributed, with Pop-Up Kowsva sales just edging out sales via our website. Our own publications continue to be the best earners for us, with Broder Wella (published 2024) especially popular. We aim to release Broder Wella A dhe Gembra in the coming year.

Current Projects

This coming year will see the publication of the following titles:

 • Gwenili hag Amazones (Swallows and Amazons), Arthur Ransome, tr. Davyth Fear
 • Kernow ha’y Breselyow Ystorek (Kernow and its Historic Wars), 2nd ed., Rod Lyon
 • A new graded reader aimed at beginners
 • A new anthology of poetry and prose

If you are interested in publishing your own work, whether original or in translation, through us, please send us an email.

Website and Bonus Material

Our revamped Books page showcases our latest publications, publication history and bonus resources, such as audio, video and activities pages for learners. Our audio recordings are also available on all major podcast platforms.

Writing Competition

The Kowethas is keen to showcase more creative work in Kernewek. We are planning a new anthology with content written by you. We are looking for prose or poetry in any orthography and at any fluency level on one of the following themes:

 • Skat dhe Skommow (Smashed to Splinters)
 • Pols Gwander (A Moment of Weakness)
 • Mires war Dhelergh (Looking Back)
 • Ryb an Avon (By the River)
 • Hanternos (Midnight)

For more details, including word limits and how to enter, see the announcement on our website. The deadline is midnight on the 17th May 2026.

The financial position of Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek has improved dramatically this year, from a £6k loss last year to a £6k gain this year.

Receipts for 2024-25 were £46k (excluding the Revive project) down from £58k last year. However, last year was favoured with a number of one-off off items – a £10k grant from Cornwall Council, generous one-off donations and some late receipts from previous years – without which receipts would have been £42k. So receipts for Kowethas core operations were £4k higher this year.

Book sales increased by 18% and revenue from both memberships and the Pennseythen by 33%. These are our main receipts as the left hand chart below shows.

Payments were £40k in 2024-25 (excluding Revive), down from £64k the previous year. We made some one-off payments last year totalling £12k, including £9.5k on consultancy. However, the remaining half of the reduction is genuine savings. We closed our shop, Kowsva, which cost £7.5k last year, replacing it with a storage unit costing £3k this year.

Although our book sales increased, the costs incurred decreased dramatically – down from £20k to £12k. This is in part due to reduced printing costs as we use Lulu Print on Demand for most of our new books, avoiding large, up-front printing bills and the need for more storage. We also cleared the historical debt for Kesva books. Our main expense, the payroll, remained much the same this year.

Assets Our funds at the bank have increased from £32,700 to £38,814 and our net assets (including stocks of books) from £36,685 to £41,936.

REVIVE Kowethas received a float of £90k from EU Horizon for the Revive project. This will be sufficient to cover at least two years of our Revive project work, after which funds will be topped up as necessary. This has increased the interest we receive. There will be further funds for the Kowethas from the Revive project after its completion in 2028.

Earnings These are our main sources of income in 2024-25 (receipts less direct payments). These have to cover shared payments such as payroll and insurance.

Last year our earnings from Sales were under £1k, this year they were over £11k. Membership and Pennseythen earnings were up over £1k each.

Next year the aim is to break even on Pennseythen 2026, given we will have to pay for accommodation. We expect to allocate some of our donations to Media micro-grants, encouraging the production of short Kernewek videos. But if we can keep Sales and Memberships up, and Donations continue, we will do better than break even again next year.

CIO Financial Report https://cornish-language.org/cio-financial-report/ Fri, 23 Jan 2026 15:43:39 +0000 https://cornish-language.org/?p=9519 A report for The Charity Commission

The post CIO Financial Report appeared first on Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek.

]]>
Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek CIO continues to be in a good position financially.

Receipts for 2024-25 were £163k, up from £116k the previous year. Notably, book sales rose from £21k to £24k, Kowethas membership fees from £6k to £8k, Pennseythen takings from £3.5k to £5.2k and interest received from £0.7k to £2.4k. We had grants of £97k this year – Rosweyth had small grants from Boardmasters (£1k) and Cornwall Council (£6k) and Kowethas received a large sum (almost £90k) for the 3 year Revive project. Donations and Gift Aid continued to provide important income.

At the same time, payments were £80k, down from £88k the previous year. This was partly due to closing the Kowethas shop, Kowsva, which cost £7.5k last year, replacing it with a storage unit costing £3k this year. There were no consultancy fees to pay this year, and the historic debt to Kesva was cleared last year.

The increase in receipts and decrease in payments resulted in a gain of £83k in 2024-25, compared to £28k in 2023-24.

As a result there was £162k at the bank on 31st October 2025. Due to the UK account protection limit which was £85k per bank, this is now split across two banks, Lloyds holding the charity’s current account and an instant access savings account whilst Cambridge and Counties Bank hold a notice savings account with a higher rate of interest.

The Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek CIO manages the finances for Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek, the Cornish Language Society, and administers the finances for the Rosweyth, the network of Cornish Language organisations. In addition Kowethas an Yeth Kernewek are partners in a three year project called Revive which started in March 2025. This is funded by EU Horizon who provided a substantial float of £90k for project operations. The Revive balance stood at £81k on 31st October 2025 but note that these funds remain the property of the EU until the final payment (due in 2028). Rosweyth held net assets of £42k and the Kowethas net assets of £42k on 31st October 2025.

Following our re-publication of Hwedhlow a-dhiworth an Orsedh last year, the Kowethas is keen to showcase more creative work in Kernewek. We are planning a new anthology with new content written by you.

We are looking for prose or poetry in Kernewek on one of the following themes:

 • Skat dhe Skommow (Smashed to Splinters)
 • Pols Gwander (A Moment of Weakness)
 • Mires war Dhelergh (Looking Back)
 • Ryb an Avon (By the River)
 • Hanternos (Midnight)

We encourage entrants to think beyond the tried-and-tested and to reflect a language that is vibrant and living, that is more than an ornament for a chocolate box.

How to Enter

To enter, send your work as a .docx, .odt or PDF in an attachment to [email protected] with the subject header “Kesstrif Skrifa 26”. Please tell us which theme your work is for if it is not the title of the work.

The deadline is midnight on the 17th May 2026. We hope to inform winners in early June.

Details

Entries should be limited to 2,000 words for prose and 50 lines for poetry. We are not looking for translations or non-fiction at this time.

Entries are welcome at any level of fluency. A good story can be told with simple grammar and we would love to hear from new writers.

Entries will be judged anonymously by the Publications Subcommittee on their creative merit and on the style and skilful use of their Cornish. We care less about missed mutations and perfect punctuation than we do about making the language come alive on the page.

Entries are accepted in any orthography or variety of Kernewek and we hope to see the diversity of Cornish represented in the finished book. We will work with successful entrants on any necessary corrections to their work.

Entries must be unpublished except where they have only previously been published in An Gannas, on personal websites or on social media.

Entries must be your own work and we do not accept any AI-assisted or AI-generated work. We will accept work written collaboratively. Multiple submissions are accepted, as are simultaneous ones.

The prize will be publication in the finished book, plus a physical copy of the printed book. Copyright will remain with the writer, but we reserve the non-exclusive right to reproduce the work in print, digital and audio form.

Late in October REVIVE teams from Cambridge, Berlin and Italy came to Cornwall to gather ideas for their Cornish immersive creations.

Volunteers from the Cornish language community contributed at afternoon workshops in Penzance, Probus and Redruth.

There were open doors sessions where people had a chance to try out immersive technology.

Mornings were spend visiting sites taking images with drones, 360 degree cameras and laser scanners, at St Just in Roseland, Boscawen-un and the Great Flat Lode.

Lots of ideas were generated and will be developed further in a series of workshops, mostly online but one in person at Kresen Kernow on 22nd November, after the Cornish Language Forum.
