Dear Friends,

What evokes a warm feeling for you at Christmas? Is it the cup of hot chocolate on a chilly day? Maybe the Christmas story and old familiar Christmas carols? Christmas lights or a child opening their presents on Christmas Day? Maybe it is knowing that your year-end giving supported families in the midst of struggles or the YOOP young people on their employment journey!

These warm feelings boil down to knowing that we have been blessed in so many ways and we want to pass on the blessing!

The teens and young adults who get help through the CYFS YOOP Program have a lot of things in common! Homelessness, academic and social failure, rejection and bullying, trauma, physical or mental health struggles, no family or one that could not give them what they needed growing up. But they also have in common that they leave YOOP feeling blessed! They have made and accomplished goals! They are more self-sufficient and independent! They believe in themselves and their future!

Your year end giving will help support more youth successes like the ones below!

Erica said, “YOOP gave me hope! Today I am doing great! I am working full time in a good job with benefits!’

Lori said that YOOP helped her learn lifelong skills. After a job shadow at a veterinary clinic, they hired her! She worked there for more than 3 years! She is proud of her many successes!

Trenton said, “If you are serious about getting a GED then this is the place to go. YOOP will help you succeed any way they can.”  He is working to become an Automotive Master Mechanic!

Anna: “If you want to change your life and accomplish your goals, enroll at YOOP!” Anna got her GED, married her best friend and wants to go back to school to become a veterinarian.

Chris: YOOP helped me take the first step into my adult life. Now, I think I’ve found my calling at my current job. I’m working helping developmentally challenged people in their homes.

Devon: YOOP helped get me back on my feet.

Chris R: His “successes in life” were getting his diploma and his daughter!   He recalled that one YOOP staff in particular “connected with him” and “staff was always there for me.”

Diana: “YOOP helped me start getting my life straight when I needed it most. Now I can dream about a work future and traveling!”

Tristan said, “It’s never too late to make sure that you have the right education; the help you need to obtain the career you want.”

Your gifts to Chehalem Youth and Family Services make a difference!

With sincere appreciation,            Charles Rice, Executive  Director

Making a Fresh Start Anna Bevan-Drury’s Story https://cyfs.net/making-a-fresh-start-anna-bevan-drurys-story/ Tue, 17 Sep 2024 20:01:00 +0000 https://cyfs.net/?p=875

Life was very busy for Anna growing up. Her parents both worked a lot and as the oldest of the children, she carried a lot of responsibility in her home. She had to grow up quickly and do a lot of parenting for her siblings. School just wasn’t that high on the priority list. She struggled with schoolwork, with her peers, and with getting the help she needed from teachers. She felt lost and invisible and that nobody cared. She stopped asking for help and got further and further behind until she dropped out when she was 17.

Anna heard about YOOP from her cousin who was a YOOP participant. She decided to start 2020 off by doing something for her future. She enrolled on December 30, 2019. Anna felt that the YOOP staff believed in her and actually cared if she came into the skill center. If Anna missed an appointment, the staff would call and check on her. YOOP gave her life some structure, something she had missed out on having while growing up. Anna started to believe in herself and gained confidence. She said, “Staff didn’t judge me. YOOP is a place I like to go just to say hi. I felt welcomed.”  Over the next two and a half years Anna completed a lot of milestones. She completed Financial Literacy and Rethinking Careers, explored the work world, and did a job shadow at Homeward Bound. During this time she also worked four different short-term jobs, each lasting three to six months. YOOP was able to support her in these jobs with transportation needs and work clothes. Anna will soon be graduating from YOOP and she is ready to be on her own. She hopes to go back to school at some point to get a veterinary degree. For now, she and her husband are both working two jobs and making plans for the future that might include children.

When asked about her accomplishments, she lists: Got my GED, married my best friend, and moved out of state to start my life with my husband. What is her advice? “If you want to change your life and accomplish your goals, enroll at YOOP!”

Building Successes in Life – Chris Rogel’s story https://cyfs.net/building-successes-in-life-chris-rogels-story/ Tue, 17 Sep 2024 19:57:41 +0000 https://cyfs.net/?p=869

Chris dropped out of school when he was 16 years old and attending high school in Pendleton. He recalls that his life was “alright”, but he got into a pattern of skipping school and struggled with classmates and bullying.

He made a move to McMinnville. He had a PO at this point who suggested he look into YOOP to finish school. One YOOP staff in particular “connected with him”. This was important to his continuing on his way, working on his diploma with YOOP. At this time he was looking to finish his diploma and obtain a driver’s license along with a job. Chris recalled that YOOP “Staff was always there for me.”

When COVID came along it also took its toll like it did for many youth. Chris had trouble adjusting to online education and transportation to YOOP was a challenge, but he did finish his Diploma just before turning 18. While he was working on his diploma, he also began exploring the idea of a construction job and did a job shadow with this in mind. Chris had a series of jobs, most not lasting very long. He was a farmworker, McDonald’s service worker, a temp worker, and he worked in food production with a couple of companies. His current job is Sanitation Operator at a Hazelnut processing plant.

Chris had a unique opportunity that interested him. He performed a YOOP Job Shadow of the Legislative Assistant at the office for Legislative Representative, Lucetta Elmer. This experience piqued his interest in the world of politics.

Now he is 21. He is still actively working toward his goals! He says that his “successes in life” were getting his diploma and his daughter! He also says “If you wanna get back on track with your education, YOOP would be the place to go!”

Summer 2024 News https://cyfs.net/summer-2024-news/ Tue, 17 Sep 2024 19:51:31 +0000 https://cyfs.net/?p=865 ]]> 865 A Year of Success at CYFS: Katt’s Story, From Hoodlum to Responsible Adult https://cyfs.net/2023-at-cyfs/ Thu, 14 Dec 2023 02:35:55 +0000 https://cyfs.net/?p=851

Dear Friends,

Let’s start with an image of a big, deep hole. Where did it come from and how did our YOOP participant end up in it? Did they dig it and then fall in? Did they stumble in by mistake when looking the other way? Did they get a big push from someone who turned out not to be a friend?

No matter how hard they try they can’t get out on their own. Our Youth Opportunity (YOOP) participants are brave and resilient! They have decided to change the trajectory of their life! YOU help build the ladder rung by rung that lets them climb out!

From Hoodlum to Responsible Adult (Katt’s Story)

I joined YOOP when I was a junior in high school. By that time, I had already attended 4-5 other high schools. I have a learning disability on top of ADHD, so I struggled with school my entire life, plus the moving around put me behind. I am not going to say that I had a horrible childhood because it definitely could have been worse. But I did struggle with a lot. I didn’t like authority figures that thought they could tell me what to do or thought they had any control over me. I was very aggressive and angry, having a lot of behavioral issues that made it difficult for me to make and keep friends. I developed horrible anxiety, borderline personality disorder, depression, and a few other mental illnesses that made schooling and everything else a lot harder. I had gone through a lot of horrible, scary, and traumatic things before I joined YOOP. I had very large walls up and put on a front that I was “scary and intimidating” so that no one would mess with me.

I had a very close friend who joined YOOP. They always talked about how great the program was, and how YOOP really goes out of their way to help you. I was 11 credits behind as a Junior and felt disappointed in myself, and very defeated, so I took the step and talked my mom into me joining YOOP.

The staff at YOOP treated me like family and showed me they really truly cared about me graduating and succeeding in life. I did not make things easy for YOOP, but they never gave up on me, ever. They took me in as a very, VERY damaged, untrusting, angry, and hopeless teenager, and turned me into an adult with an AMAZING work ethic, money management skills, and so much more hope for myself and my future. The staff, and even my peers in YOOP, believed in me and supported me the entire time. They saw something in me that I didn’t! It made me determined to be the best me I can be!

During my time at YOOP, they helped me get my GED, driver’s license, clothing, gas for my car, rent and/or bills money, food handlers card, legal name change, shelter, food, hygiene products, and so much more. They taught me things that public school did not. Financial literacy (an ENTIRE class!!), communication skills, problem-solving skills, resume, job interviews, LOTS of amazing work experience, and SO many more important life skills. They did all of this and also motivated and supported me to get my GED. If you are having any sort of issue and you bring it to YOOP’s attention, I promise you they will go above and beyond to either help you get your needs met or give you every single resource and piece of information you need to do it yourself. YOOP is NOT just for graduating, this program will help prepare you for this world. I can honestly say that I would NOT be where I am right now at 23 years old without YOOP. I’m a supervisor at a job! YOOP was one of my best decisions!

Holiday Blessings to you!

A Year of Success at CYFS: Be Part of the Story https://cyfs.net/2022-year-end/ Tue, 20 Dec 2022 17:20:53 +0000 https://cyfs.net/?p=814

Dear Friends,

You are part of the story of each and every young person and family receiving services at Chehalem Youth and Family Services (CYFS). Here at CYFS we are serving 70 youth per month in our Youth Opportunity Program (YOOP) and 609 hours of safe visitation between children and their noncustodial parents this year. Your year-end support makes happy endings possible for this young person and all the families we serve!

Finding Belonging in a Very Scary World

At age 17 and a high school dropout, Nethan decided that he wanted to change his life. This brought him to the Chehalem Youth and Family Services’ Youth Opportunity Program.

Nethan enrolled in YOOP, he quickly passed two GED tests. His last two tests got derailed when he became homeless to escape the verbal and emotional abuse from his stepdad who was abusing drugs, Nethan, and his mother. After a YOOP staff encountered him sleeping on the front porch of our building, they had a long heart-to-heart conversation, talking about his tough choices and not giving up on his goals. Another YOOP staff kept in touch with him regularly as well, letting him know that we were there cheering for him on each step of his journey. While homeless, he adopted a stray dog, taking care of him even when he had so little himself. Unfortunately, in a low moment, he turned to pills and it was a wake-up call to realize he was a drug addict just like his stepdad! He went back home in the winter only to have things worse than ever with his toxic stepdad. His stepdad was determined to have him leave even to the point of poisoning his dog. Throughout, YOOP was there for him, helping him with essentials like a tent and blankets, laundry, a driver’s license, our job skills training, and an internship and work clothes. Because of this support, he was able to continue to take steps forward toward his future.

One day he received a phone call from his sister inviting him to come to Port Angeles, WA, and celebrate the Fourth of July with family. He enjoyed being around family and they wanted him to move up there. This was the first time he felt wanted by someone other than his mother. He finally had a safe environment and stable living where he didn’t have to look over his shoulder. He stopped using drugs and started to look for employment.

YOOP staff maintained contact with Nethan. He went through several jobs and worked only a few months at each before getting fired. This left Nethan feeling like nothing was going his way. Eventually, during one of the contacts with YOOP staff, he said that he was ready to try to finish his GED and wondered if he could do that in Washington. Charlie worked with him long distance and helped him enroll at Peninsula Community College in Port Angeles in a GED prep class and finish his GED six months after moving to Washington. He also completed two terms of college before going to work for a truss company. This was when he discovered he wanted to work in the construction industry.

Another move took him to Malaga, WA to live with another family member. He moved in, started attending church, found a job in construction, and has worked there for over a year. Nethan is finding solid ground to stand on and step forward into his future!

When asked what he would say if he was to tell someone about YOOP he answered, “YOOP treats you like a person not like a number. They care and won’t give up on you.” A common thread through Nethan’s experience was finding belonging with people (and even a dog) who cared during some of his roughest moments. Nethan wisely said, “No matter what you’re going through you can always change as long as you put in the effort.”

You, our friends and partners, make the difference for these young people’s success through the YOOP program and happy, healthy, and safe parent-child relationships through our Chehalem Parenting Connection program.

With sincere appreciation,

Charlie Rice

Summer News https://cyfs.net/summer-news/ Mon, 08 Aug 2022 23:19:13 +0000 https://cyfs.net/?p=802 ]]> 802 Miracles Happen Every Day! https://cyfs.net/a-call-from-julie/ Fri, 10 Dec 2021 03:48:43 +0000 https://cyfs.net/?p=773 Do you ever wonder about the good that comes from your support? Here at the Youth Opportunity Program miracles happen every day! Just this week I was reminded of the huge impact our program makes on people’s lives.

This week I received a call from Julie, a former YOOP participant who had completed her journey with us December 2019. She made a simple request, “How can I get one of the YOOP Christmas gift tags. I want to ‘pass it on’ to someone who needs the help that I got.” Julie admits that she made a lot of bad choices growing up and pretty much ran wild, struggled with substances, dropped out of school and eventually was homeless in Portland.  When she was 19 she returned to Yamhill County and got into recovery. She realized that she had “Zero hopes for a work future” and came in to YOOP. She remembers countless hours of tutoring and staff that were always willing to “talk her through stuff”. She completed her GED and a work experience through YOOP which helped her get and keep her current job.

She has now been employed by Cascade Steel for 3 years, has a good relationship with her family and is doing well! Her resources are limited, but still she wants to do what she can to build up and support another person in their journey. She remembers how much it meant to her to receive gifts at Christmas. So she bought everything on the gift tag and has already delivered it to us.

Her grateful heart led her to do a kindness for another. This is only one of many miracles! You, our friends and supporters, don’t always know how a life has been touched and changed. You give in faith that even though you are not able to be the one to personally come alongside a struggling youth, you play an important part in the transformation miracle! Right now there are 66 young people getting help in changing their lives. With your year end support we can count on many more lives transformed.

Have you had help overcoming adversity in your life or been blessed with very little adversity? Either way we all have so much to be grateful for! What action is your grateful heart leading you to take? Consider using the enclosed envelope to make Chehalem Youth and Family Services part of your year-end giving or donate on line at www.cyfs.net.

Warmest Wishes for your holidays!

Destined For Success Despite Delays https://cyfs.net/destined-for-success-despite-delays/ Mon, 13 Sep 2021 22:57:59 +0000 https://2021dev.cyfs.net/?p=553 James came to YOOP when he was 17. He had dropped out of high school after some legal trouble left him in debt over $2,000. He understood that he needed to get an education but figured it was going to be easier to get his GED rather than his High School Diploma. “I had to find a job to pay my fine and couldn’t work and go to high school at the same time,” he states.

James attended Yamhill Carlton High school when he got involved with the wrong crowd. There was a certain incident that occurred that led James to be very upset one day at school. He was approached by a fellow student who had said things to James that intensely aggravated him. James decided to leave the situation and walk outside. James walked outside and slammed the door shut behind him, damaging the door of the school. This incident led James to get charged with Criminal Mischief in the second degree. Ultimately this left James with a fine of $1,200 and no probation. James was left with the decision of either dropping out or staying in school. He knew that he was the only one responsible to pay the fine, “I had no income at the time so immediately I knew that I was going to have to get a job.” James figured that going to school for 8 hours a day would not get him closer to paying that fine and ultimately dropped out of High School and got a job at the Mobil Gas Station in McMinnville.

Flash forward to James going down to the Yamhill County Courthouse to pay a portion of his fine where he saw a flyer for YOOP. He called YOOP the next day and was placed on the Orientation Waiting List. James faithfully maintained contact waiting for an opening to attend the Orientation session.

Eager to get started on his GED, James enrolled in YOOP in February of 2020 and was able to get a GED practice test in before COVID-19 put a delay in his plans. James patiently waited until we opened to get back in to complete his GED. James scored above passing in all four of the official GED practice tests and was ready to take his official tests. He passed the first of the four GED tests only to encounter another delay due to wildfires in Oregon and the temporary closing of the testing center in McMinnville. Staff was able to schedule James’s last three tests for the last week of September.  He passed all three.  James was able to complete his GED in one month. September was an eventful month. In addition to earning his GED, he also passed his Oregon Driver License Test and became a licensed driver, accomplishing another of his goals.  If you think this week couldn’t get better for James, it did! He landed a job starting October 5th at Indigo Painting and Contracting where he is painting exterior and interior on commercial job sites.  He is working 40 hours a week and is making $15.00 an hour.

Throughout this whole journey, James has been very thankful for the staff at YOOP. He shared, “There is no way I would be where I am today without YOOP’s support. They pushed me to get out of my comfort zone and actually change myself for the better.”
