It is definitely bureaucratic, but it was never specifically designed to exclude anyone; it just so happens that the bureaucracy of it all puts people off, which I completely understand. I’ve been on a committee for the last year (and we just got reauthorised for one more year) which aims to propose large-scale changes to the way the Business Meeting operates, so that it is more open to newcomers and easier to participate in. I’m hopeful we’ll be able to help modernise it and make it easier for folks to get involved, or at least have a say in things they care about.

Many years ago, I attended a WorldCon Business meeting. It was bureaucratic and seemed designed to exclude the average Fan. I’ve never returned – although I confess to priming SMOF friends on what to say at one!

I don’t think you’re too far behind. But yeah it’s been such a rush! Loved every bit of it, cried so many times… I was forewarned by a man on the Staten Island ferry in August that “a lot of shit is about to Go Down” and by golly, he was right
