Guidelines for conduct at the Data Journalism Challenge

We aim to provide an environment that fosters collaboration, fairness, and encourages people who have had poor experiences at other events to participate in this one to create a positive space for all participants.

1. Be kind to each other. Treat everyone with respect and keep an open and curious mindset to learn from the different perspectives that everyone brings to this learning experience. Participate with the understanding that everyone deserves to be here and has a right to partake in the program without hesitation or harassment, discrimination, and other forms of condescension, both overt and covert.

2. Speak up if you see or hear something. You are encouraged to politely respond when you are feeling disrespected or noticing others being disrespected. A person might not be aware of the repercussions of their behaviour, therefore, we actively encourage participants to politely bring attention to their behaviour by means of inquiry and constructive feedback. If you are being harassed or feel uncomfortably threatened, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please DM a staff member of the AI Launch Lab immediately.

3. Harassment is never tolerated. Harassment includes, but is not limited to: verbal language that reinforces social structures of domination related to gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disabilities, neurodiversity, physical appearance, body size, ethnicity, nationality, race, age, religion, or other protected category; sexual imagery in public spaces; deliberate intimidation; stalking; harassing photography or recording; sustained disruption of talks or other events; offensive verbal language; inappropriate physical contact; and unwelcome sexual attention.
