What is the problem your solution addresses?

Hate against Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities has increased, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The horrific tragedies that have occurred were felt by AAPIs across the country. However, the AAPI community has continued to remain resilient, combating this issue through a series of solutions such as rallies and riots, or any possible way for our stories to be heard. As a result, one solution was the creation of the +1 more., an app dedicated to protecting Asian American students from being possible victims of hate and violence, and to teach people that the people of the AAPI community are more than just a false accusation of being the cause of a worldwide pandemic.

Why did you pick this solution, and how does it address the problem?

After brainstorming multiple solutions to the problems we identified in our discovery, we recognized that we all identified as Asian American students enduring the struggles of embracing our identities and fearing for our safety, especially after the occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic. We thought that this idea would be a brilliant solution to educate the community on the dangers inaccurate stereotypes can have and to protect the people in the AAPI community. With easy access to individuals near the user who they identify similar interests and identities with, students will have a vast resource of supporters who they know are easily available in terms of support, whether that be to make a new friend or even someone who is willing to walk home with them late at night after class. In addition, the app has a tab where if they feel they are vulnerable to danger, can immediately tap, which will notify the police, in addition to their close contacts. By providing our users with an easy-to-use app with a plethora of resources, we are empowering them to tackle these stereotypes by sharing their struggles with those who share similar experiences and who are also fighting for a change.
