Inspiration

In today’s world, despite, and perhaps because of, technology, we are more connected than ever, yet more isolated than ever before. Nearly one in two adults in America reports experiencing loneliness. In May 2023, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy declared loneliness a public health epidemic, affecting roughly 50% of American adults and carrying health risks comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

This crisis, intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic but rooted in decades of declining social connection, fuels rising rates of depression, anxiety, cardiovascular disease, and even dementia.

We don’t just lack interaction, we lack presence.

Activities Match is built to restore that presence. It invites you into real connection through shared experiences, whether it’s a hobby you love or something you’ve never tried before. It removes the pressure of planning, the awkwardness of cold introductions, and the friction of logistics. You simply show up, together.

Because connection shouldn’t be complicated. And presence matters now more than ever.

What it does

Activities Match makes meeting people effortless.

You can create an event, anything from a coffee walk to a coding session. Others can like your event to signal they’re interested. You’ll see who liked it and choose to like them back. If you both like each other, it’s a match, and they automatically receive your event details with any additional information you’ve included.

Prefer to explore? Browse events happening around you. Like or ignore what interests you. Use Swipe Mode for quick decisions or List Mode for a more detailed view.

No endless messaging. No awkward cold starts. Just mutual interest, and showing up.

How we built it

CSS, typescript, react, next.js, supabase, google-cloud, gemini, zippopotamus, and custom rest-APIs.

Challenges we ran into

Authentication was a big challenge and took awhile to figure out. Additionally, understanding how to implement Gemini (Imagen Model) took a long time too.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It's our first hackathon so every feature that works is an accomplishment :)

What we learned

We learned how to integrate APIs and AI models, use Supabase for storage, build a more robust backend, and effectively refine the frontend to make it more personalized and user-friendly.

What's next for Activities Match

We’re excited about the future of Activities Match and have a clear roadmap for the next phase of development: Interactive Map Feature We plan to introduce a real-time map that allows users to discover nearby activities based on their location. This will make it easier to find events, meetups, and activity partners in their area, with improved visual context and filtering options.

In-App Messaging We are also developing a built-in messaging system that will allow users to communicate directly within the platform. This will help users coordinate plans, discuss activity details, and build stronger connections safely and efficiently.

These additions will make Activities Match more interactive, location-aware, and community-focused, bringing us closer to our goal of making it effortless to discover and join activities with like-minded people.
