Inspiration
AdornNet was created with the futures of low-income students in mind. A big issue low-income students might face in higher education and beyond are lost opportunities to make meaningful connections and social skills that could benefit them later on in their career paths. We decided to examine this issue at a closer level and devise a solution.
What it does
AdornNet is a free-of-cost networking website that also has options for clothing rentals. AdornNet’s main focus is to show students nearby networking events, such as career fairs or workshops.
What We Learned
We all know how first impressions are important in the way you perceive someone-- hence the “birds of a feather” effect. The effect talks about how in nature, birds tend to trust and see other birds that have similar feathers to their own, rather than birds who look different. This can also be seen in humans. Studies have shown that people tend to subconsciously favor people who are similar to them, whether it be in personality or something more visible such as clothing. It is important to dress for the occasion, and we wanted to keep that in mind when designing this website. This is also where the website’s name, AdornNet, comes from. The user is “adorning” themselves in the proper attire to network.
How It Works
Once the user clicks on the event and signs up for it, it can notify the host on how many people have signed up. The website can also use this information and store it as cookies, so the website can recommend more events similar to the ones that the user has signed up for before. With the same location services we can check to see where the user can pick up any attire to rent if they need it. If there aren’t any around, we can notify the user of the closest location that they can visit to pick it up. We could also store their clothing preferences depending on what they look for the most in cookies, allowing them to see more things that they would prefer to see.
