Inspiration

Medical imaging plays a critical role in diagnosing diseases, but the number of medical scans produced every day is growing rapidly. Radiologists often have to review large volumes of X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs under time pressure. In many healthcare systems, especially in developing regions, the shortage of radiologists can lead to delayed diagnoses and increased workload for medical professionals.

AfyaDX was inspired by the idea that Artificial Intelligence can assist radiologists by helping them analyze medical images faster and generate structured diagnostic reports. The goal is not to replace doctors, but to support them with intelligent tools that improve efficiency and diagnostic workflows.

What it does

AfyaDX is an AI-powered radiology assistant designed to help doctors manage medical imaging cases more efficiently.

The platform allows users to:

Upload and view medical imaging scans
Run AI-assisted analysis on medical images
Detect potential abnormalities
Generate structured diagnostic reports
Manage patient cases in one centralized platform

By combining AI analysis with a streamlined workflow system, AfyaDX helps radiologists save time and improve diagnostic accuracy.

How we built it

AfyaDX was developed as a modern web-based platform designed for speed, usability, and scalability.

The platform includes:

Frontend: A React-based interface that allows doctors to easily view and manage imaging cases.
Backend: An API-driven backend that processes patient data, manages workflows, and handles image analysis.
AI Layer: Machine learning models used to assist in analyzing medical images and highlighting possible findings.
Database: Secure storage for patient cases, scans, and diagnostic reports.
Cloud Infrastructure: A scalable environment that enables reliable image processing and storage.

The system workflow allows a radiologist to upload a scan, run AI analysis, review highlighted findings, and generate a diagnostic report within a single interface.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was designing a workflow that integrates AI assistance without disrupting how radiologists normally work. Medical professionals require tools that are intuitive, reliable, and fast.

Another challenge was handling medical imaging data efficiently, as scan files can be large and require optimized visualization and processing. Ensuring that the platform remains responsive while processing complex data was an important technical challenge.

We also focused on designing a clean and simple user interface so that medical professionals can quickly adopt the platform without extensive training.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

One of our biggest accomplishments is successfully building a working platform that combines medical image viewing, AI-assisted analysis, and diagnostic reporting in a single system.

We are also proud of creating a streamlined workflow that reduces the time required for radiologists to analyze images and produce reports. The platform demonstrates how AI can be integrated into healthcare tools in a practical and accessible way.

Building a functional prototype within a limited time frame and turning the concept into a real product is something our team is very proud of.

What we learned

Through developing AfyaDX, we learned the importance of designing AI systems that support human expertise rather than replace it. Healthcare technology must prioritize reliability, usability, and trust.

We also learned how critical it is to understand the real workflow of medical professionals when designing digital health tools. Building effective solutions requires combining technical knowledge with a deep understanding of user needs.

What's next for AfyaDX

The next step for AfyaDX is to further improve the AI models and expand the platform’s capabilities. Future development will focus on improving diagnostic accuracy, supporting more imaging types, and integrating with hospital information systems.

We also plan to pilot the platform with healthcare providers to gather feedback from medical professionals and continue refining the system.

Our long-term vision is to make AfyaDX a powerful AI-assisted diagnostic platform that helps healthcare systems deliver faster, smarter, and more accessible medical imaging diagnostics.
