Inspiration
Memory is normally something which happens by chance. It can feel like a helpless prayer: you might be reading a book, and think to yourself “oh boy, I’d better remember this.”
But using a spaced repetition system (SRS), you can make memory a choice. With just a few minutes a day, you can memorize thousands of facts. It is an evidence-based (1) method that works even for dementia patients, lauded by the likes of Andy Matuschak (2) (founder of Khan Academy's Research division) and Michael Nielsen (3) (one of the pioneers of quantum computing).
SRS software like Anki and Quizlet are popular among medical, law, and language students; they have millions of users.
However, SRS is held back by the fact that:
- creating flashcards takes a lot of time and mindful effort.
- reviewing flashcards on a screen is monotonous and uninspiring.
Enter Aido. We use artificial intelligence to automate and animate spaced repetition, turning it into a enjoyable, more humane experience.
Goals
With Aido, our goal is to:
- Intelligently generate flashcards from notes
- Make flashcards more engaging: Aido will converse with you in real-time to review your flashcards. No more swiping/reading on a phone!
- Catch frustration and doubt before it becomes an obstacle; Aido will use empathic AI to provide support and deepen understanding.
How we're building Aido
- Hume AI's Empathic Voice Interface for speech-to-speech and emotion detection,
- GPT-4o+Vision API as supplemental LLM for general intelligence tasks,
- Anki as our database layer / for tapping into an existing network of users.
What's next for Aido
- Implement automatic flashcard generation
- Use the best medium for each task- entering 'ease of recall' could be done via on-screen buttons
- Use emotion/prosody data from Hume to provide better support and explanations. If you don't have a deep emotional connection to the content you're reviewing, maybe Aido can help you identify that and delete the flashcards.
- Go from prototype to shipping a full mobile/web app people can use.
