Inspiration

Prisoners with long sentences often have a difficult time adjusting to life in society after their release. Many convicts face discrimination once out of incarceration and aren't able to access the same resources and support that other civilians have in society. Following their release, some formerly incarcerated people report to their parole officers, whose job is to facilitate rehabilitation, ease them back into society, and keep records of their employment and general well-being. As someone who empathizes with formally incarcerated peoples' struggles, we decided to create a mobile app which would help convicts ease their transition back into society.

What it does

Anew is a personal app that formats all the information an ex-convict would need to help get their lives back on track. By implementing a budgeting/financial tool, habit tracker to keep addictions at bay and promote healthy practices, and including a scheduling calendar, the previously incarcerated are able to transition back to society more easily. In addition, our app allows the user to easily share information with their parole officer by implementing easy-to-read components.

How we built it

Our app utilizes React, Chakra, Flask, and CSS.

Challenges we ran into

The most challenging aspect of this project was learning how to collaborate together on the same project and avoiding clashes within our code. Since this was all of our team's first hackathon experience, there was a huge learning curve in terms of how we should get started and learning new developmental tools.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of our teamwork. We were able to work together and combine our front and back end seamlessly. We are also proud of the fact that we were able to produce a submittable project within the given time limit.

What we learned

We learned how to connect front and back ends, making both ends collaborate (using React, Flask, and CSS).

What's next for anew

We hope to continue working on anew to launch an app for real-life use. We really believe that our app can help make a difference in the lives of ex-convicts and hope to connect our app to more resources and implement more personalized features. Additionally, we hope to add more features to the calendar to provide even more support.
