Yes, We Applican!

Inspiration

Recently, Jade, a UI / UX Designer, had been asked to complete design challenges on behalf of companies that she has applied to. These design challenges ranged from 1 hour questionnaires to redesigning a company's current offerings with unlimited time frames.

She realized that the process of facilitating and submitting design challenges was unstandardized and clunky, and at times, unethical. She set out to redesign the process to provide companies with a streamlined, quick, and less costly way to manage candidate work samples, as well as giving candidates a fair and level playing field for submitting challenges.

What it does

Applican is a web platform that manages your recruitment workflow.

For the HR professional, Applican makes it easy to create challenges and manage the results of design, copywriting, and/or marketing challenges. The streamlined process keeps everything in one place and allows quick review and comparison of candidates.

For the job candidate, Applican provides a standardized way to vet candidates on a level playing field and decreases uncomfortable interactions as related to unethical work. As a result, candidates feel respected and empowered to share their skills.

How we built it

We used HTML5/CSS3 on the front-end and Node.js/Express/MongoDB on the back-end.

Challenges we ran into

This was Jade's first time coding at a hackathon, so it took some time to get re-acquainted with her old friend, HTML/CSS.

We ran into problems setting up email notifications and took some time to configure the backend.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Jade created the web designs/mockups and was able to successfully code the web UI within the first day. Her teammate completed the bulk of the app within the first 24 hours of the hackathon.

What we learned

We applican do anything we put our mind to.

What's next for Applican

The web platform is the first mode of distribution. Next, we will be creating an API/web plugin for other companies to manage the work samples for various job posts.
