Inspiration
I was inspired by stories I've heard of my friends being patted down solely on their appearance and knew things had to change. The designs were inspired by sci-fi movies and books.
What it does
ArkAngel removes people from the pat down procedure by relying on an AI interface along with haptic sensors so the machine can tell if someone may be carrying something dangerous or not.
How we built it
I first sketched ideas out on post its, then moved to paper, then onto foam models. From testing ergonomics there, I moved into 3D modeling to get renders of the product.
Challenges we ran into
Challenges were definitely figuring out what technology exists that would help me with my end goal. I looked into updating current MMWs, biomimicry if there were a similar process in nature, and biometrics before landing on this idea.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of learning more about the struggles the trans community faces in my research and I hope that this idea will help mitigate anxieties with travel in the future. I'm also proud of learning so much about the different technological advances that are out there as well as the history of airline security.
What we learned
I learned that the process for airline security is rather recent and has made major developments in the 2 decades its has existed (for TSA at least).
What's next for Ark Angel
I'd want to learn more about how haptics works and focus on creating a works-like model or at least a more detailed plan on how this can be implemented if the technology isn't there yet.
