For our project, we decided to make a website that shows the nearest charging points for electric cars, as well as what type of car is best for a user. We did this because there is a misconception that people shouldn’t buy electric cars because there is nowhere to charge them and so are difficult to own, which means people continue using petrol cars. Pollution is an enormous problem that contributes to global warming, due to there being excess greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and the heated Earth causes sea level rise, and therefore flooding, which can drive people out of their homes, droughts, which are very harmful to communities, and many other problems. By demonstrating how simple it is to find charging ports, supporting people who are eager to buy their own electric cars, and showing the damage non-electric cars can cause, we hope to encourage people to make the switch and save the planet in doing so! One challenge we faced was starting the project, as all of us are first time hackers and so we didn’t know which softwares to use. However, once we found help from a mentor and started coding, it became a lot easier. Another issue was coding the JavaScript to calculate which charging point was the closest, as the calculations with longitudes and latitudes were difficult to carry out. We learnt new skills for CSS to format our website design, and while our original didn’t look exactly as we’d planned, it was a design we were proud of.
