Astronaut Adventures!

Inspiration

We drew inspiration from this year’s Girl Hacks Hackathon theme - SPACE! We wanted to make this an interactive web app geared towards engaging kids with space with fun (and occasionally educational) content! We implemented a Mad Libs page in our web app, which draws from the Mad Libs website! We used generative AI tools for our Mad Libs prompts and home page picture! Also, our Space Pics page uses images/content from the NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day archive! Additionally, the music on our E.T. Jams page and the jokes on our Outlandish Jokes page are not our own. Rights/credits for these elements belong to the appropriate entities!

What it does

Engages kids with the wonders of outer space through interactive features:

Chatbot with fun facts about space!
NASA images with youth-oriented descriptions!
Space-themed pop songs!
Mad Libs!
Space jokes!

How we built it

Used repl.it as a real-time, collaborative, code development space
Used Streamlit to develop the web app
Used NASA’s extensive image repository
Tested out code using Streamlit Github Codespaces

Challenges we ran into

Had issues implementing Streamlit for the first few hours of the hackathon until we found a Streamlit Community Cloud guide (https://docs.streamlit.io/streamlit-community-cloud/get-started/quickstart)
Figured out how to collaborate real-time on code with other teammates (solved using repl.it)

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Figured out how to use Streamlit to make our front-end development so much more efficient!
Made a fun (pun-laden) web app like GIRLBOSSES!

What we learned

While developing our app, we had the opportunity to learn how to use Streamlit, a Python library used to create websites in a more user-friendly way. Working on this project also allowed us to explore various Python concepts, which were completely new to some of our team members. Through handling user-inputs to utilizing python dictionaries, we were able to improve our Python skills and are now more proficient web developers. Lastly, we had an absolute blast crafting up space themed facts and jokes, which ignited our own interest in outer space!

What's next for Astronaut Adventures!

In the future, we plan on fleshing out parts of our web app some more, such as adding additional complete Mad Libs prompts, picture/description pairs to the “Space Pics!” page, space-themed songs, adding more content/interactive elements to our chat bot, and more!
