Inspiration
Being healthy is important for people of all ages. But the concern, of maintaining good health among children, is growing daily for people of all ages. Our app is meant to address this issue particularly in children. We chose children to be the main focus of this app because maintaining good health at a young age will ensure to some extent that people will not have to face dangerous health issues until a certain point in adulthood. Introducing an app that tracks maintaining good health at a young age also establishes discipline in children. If children have the discipline in childhood to make time for exercise among their busy schedules of school, homework, extracurricular activities, and hanging out with friends; then maintaining good health in adulthood won't be an issue.
What it does
This app tracks the water intake, exercise, and screen time. Once the user enters the amount of water they drink, the app generates a certain amount of star credits. The user can use their star credits to travel from one planet to another and learn facts about planets. Meanwhile, for each hour of screen time the user inputs, they lose a certain amount of points and lose progress on how far they travel from Earth, the base planet.
How we built it
We built this app using the MIT App Inventor. We learnt about this app Inventor and how it functions in the boot camp that was conducted earlier in the day. Once we had a basic introduction to the app Inventor, we continued to learn about how the app Inventor, and applied our skills to make the app.
Challenges we ran into
While building this app we faced many challenges, the first one being what our project would address. Later, once we decided what our project would be about we faced more challenges like how we would incorporate the theme of space. Then we decided that we would include facts about space. The main challenge we faced was making the planet fuel requirements variable. This was challenging because we were learning while making the app. This made it so much harder to create the app in a time efficient way, but also working at the same time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We learnt how to use the MIT App Inventor, and we were able to apply our skills -to some extent- to make an app that works and meets the purpose of creating an app.
What we learned
We learned how to use the MIT App Inventor. We also learnt the importance of time management, and how it is important to split time effectively in order to finish tasks as effectively as possible.
What's next for AstroQuest
We want to improve the app, and continue to make it more usable and efficient. We want to improve the app and make it more interesting so that it attracts users.
