Summary: Connect is a non-profit tutoring app for mobile created in 2017 by educators Lily and Sarah C., Arushi H., and Grace J. intended for a multitude of people in providing live tutoring to anyone. Athens Connect links students to high school tutors who can earn volunteer hours from their time tutoring. Athens Connect’s goal is to provide educational opportunities to students from under-represented or lower-education areas. Students can schedule live, 30-minute, interactive sessions with tutors, and the tutors can provide ample help to the students in terms of English essays, SAT and ACT preparation, and academic assistance.
Our Story:
What it does
Athens Connect brings qualified peer tutors in contact with struggling high school students who would not be able to find such help on their own. These peer tutors benefit from enhanced understanding of the concepts they are helping other students understand and extra credit from their teachers in the topics they are tutoring for. Before they are allowed to tutor they must achieve an 85 or higher on the corresponding subject test.
How I built it
We built Athens Connect using bloxmob and our shared past experience.
Challenges I ran into
Bloxmob was time consuming at times, and we struggled to enable the chat function on our app.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are proud that we made new friends, expanded our knowledge of app development, and the subjects we researched. Together, we APPtly APPlied our studies to work towards a shared goal of helping others and making a global impact.
What I learned
We learned how to utilize bloxmob and about web and app development in general.
What's next for Athens Connect
We hope to expand our tutoring subjects and add an environmental aspect that connects students with nearby compost centers.
