Inspiration
Our inspiration came from the butterfly mark that appears on Lupus patients. Butterflies represent transformation, hope, and rebirth, and through their image we wanted to bring hope and a sense of beauty to Lupus patients as they use our app to stay consistent with their medicine while growing a beautiful garden of butterflies.
What it does
We created a mobile game where users can grow and collect butterflies by growing them from their egg form until they become butterflies. They gain currency to feed the butterflies and buy more eggs by logging their daily hydroxychloroquine intake. We implemented a lottery system in the eggs, where certain eggs will contain butterflies of different rarities. There are no in-app purchases, only the in-game currency is used. The users will not know what type of butterfly they are necessarily getting, adding a sense of anticipation when collecting butterflies. This game is meant to be played daily, since they have to take their medicine on the daily and the eggs will only turn to butterflies if you "feed" the eggs/caterpillars, where feeding would be the same as the user taking their medication..
How we built it
We created an interactive wireframe on Figma that shows each frame in our game. We focused mainly on the design and how the user would progress their butterfly collection.
Challenges we ran into
Some of our challenges included
- Organizing our thoughts
- How to incorporate the butterfly theme in a respectful yet visually appealing way
- Trying to develop the game in a perspective that people with Lupus could enjoy, even though we personally don't have experience with the condition.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the cohesive game idea we created. We implemented a story, and we showed how the functionalities would work. We love our design, and are proud that we were able to add some beauty and fun into a task that might otherwise be daunting for users with Lupus.
What we learned
- How to work with Figma in more detail when creating our wireframe.
- Accessibility and Usability features and how they impact the user.
- How we can create something without necessarily experiencing what the users experience.
What's next for BAAM!
Hopefully implementing it into a fully fledged out mobile application that is available on the App Store and Google Play Store.
