Inspiration.

People in wheelchairs carry lots of gadgets for their everyday needs. They often carry a backpack on the handles of their chair, but struggle to access it.

What it does

Our project highlights a simple track system with pulleys that allow the user to slide the bag from the back of their chair to the side without needing to reach around.

How we built it

We prototyped our idea with bent conduit, rope hooks, and para-cord.

Challenges we ran into

Our pulley system does not work adequately for easy use. Tracks are needed in the design to enable smoother operation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have build a life size model of our concept that allows us to test the basic scale, height, and mounting points.

What we learned

We learned that sometimes simple ideas are difficult to execute. Personal preferences for wheelchair products are highly varied based on ability.

What's next for Backpack Access

Next step is to develop the extruded rail system with improved pulleys. We will then develop a panier style bag made to work most seamlessly with our system based on the needs of our users in wheelchairs.
