Inspiration

As a team we feel the best way to watch the game is in the bar with your best mates! Problem is we all disagree, so we decided to develop an app with a bet leaderboard, allowing us to see who really knows their stuff.

What it does

When you check into a bar the app rewards you with 200 loyalty points to start. You and your mates all select the game you're watching, you all see the William Hill live inplay bets and then it's game on! Each person bets the loyalty points they've earned in the bar and a scrolling leaderboard updates in realtime, promoting friendly banter between friends and associating the fun with the William Hill brand.

How we built it

We built a node.js backend, feeding off a mongo db and hosted on heroku. Front end is a Material android app. We were keen to follow a clear cut, all the processing happens serverside.

Challenges we ran into

Facebook authentication has more than a couple of gotchas...

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our full tech stack. It's cloud, reactive and most importantly, live right now.

What we learned

One word. Swagger. It was invaluable in developing a clean RESTful api, we won't do a server project again without it.

What's next for BetBar

Taking it to bars! We want some feedback, we imagine the app would work best combined with a bars loyalty points. It's then dual benefit, the bar gets promotion from the social media check-ins plus it's a novel way to use the loyalty points, and likely to bring people back somewhere they know this is supported.
