Inspiration

The inspiration for Bearcat Mindscape emerged from the growing need to support student mental health in a holistic and innovative way. Recognizing the proven benefits of nature in reducing stress and improving well-being, we wanted to create a space that integrates the calming effects of plants with the cutting-edge capabilities of artificial intelligence. The idea was to develop a unique environment where technology enhances the therapeutic potential of nature, providing students and faculty with a personalized, stress-relieving experience that fits seamlessly into their busy lives. The concept was further inspired by the desire to foster a sense of community and engagement on campus, offering a sanctuary where people can connect, grow, and thrive.

What it does

Bearcat Mindscape is an AI-powered indoor community garden facility at the University of Cincinnati, designed to enhance mental health and well-being. It offers multiple garden rooms, each tailored to different therapeutic environments (e.g., zen gardens, floral spaces) where students and faculty can relax and rejuvenate. Using an app, users complete mental health surveys, and AI algorithms match them with the appropriate garden room for their needs. Real-time biofeedback devices monitor stress levels, allowing the AI to adjust the room's ambiance, lighting, and sound to optimize relaxation. Additionally, the main community garden offers a space for planting activities, where students can nurture plants with the help of AI-powered soil sensors that provide personalized care recommendations.

How we built it

To bring Bearcat Mindscape to life, we combined the principles of biophilic design with cutting-edge AI and sensor technologies. The facility was constructed to include multiple themed garden rooms and a central community garden, each carefully designed to foster a deep connection with nature. We developed custom AI algorithms capable of interpreting real-time biometric data and environmental inputs to adapt the garden environments dynamically. The Mindscape App was created to facilitate user engagement, from booking sessions to receiving plant care notifications. Smart sensors were integrated throughout the facility to monitor soil conditions, light, and other factors, all connected to the AI platform for continuous feedback and adjustment. Collaboration with mental health professionals, horticulturists, and technology experts ensured a seamless blend of therapeutic design and intelligent technology.

Challenges we ran into

Throughout the development of Bearcat Mindscape, we faced several challenges, including ensuring data privacy and security while handling sensitive mental health and biometric data. Developing AI models that accurately interpret diverse biometric signals and environmental variables to provide effective, personalized interventions required significant calibration and testing. Integrating multiple technologies—such as wearables, sensors, and AI systems—into a cohesive platform posed technical difficulties. Engaging the campus community to build awareness and participation presented its own challenges, as did securing initial funding and sponsorships to ensure the project's financial sustainability.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of several key accomplishments, including the successful implementation of an AI system that dynamically adapts environments to reduce stress and improve well-being. Our facility has become a valued space on campus, fostering community and providing a hub for relaxation, mindfulness, and social interaction. We have integrated sustainable practices into the design, promoting plant care and donating produce to local partners. Our ability to engage students meaningfully by offering them control over their environment and plant care has been a standout success. Additionally, our partnerships with local businesses, research organizations, and wellness brands have positioned Bearcat Mindscape as a leader in innovative mental health solutions.

What we learned

In developing the concept for Bearcat Mindscape, we learned the value of integrating nature and technology to create a unique approach to mental health. Our research showed that a multidisciplinary approach - combining AI, horticulture, and psychology - would be essential to design a space that genuinely supports well-being. We recognized the importance of user experience in making the facility welcoming and accessible, as well as the need for flexibility in addressing potential challenges, such as data privacy, technological integration, and community engagement.

Working as a group, we learned the importance of collaboration and communication, combining diverse perspectives to refine our ideas and tackle complex problems creatively. We also realized that fostering strong partnerships with local businesses, research organizations, and university departments would be crucial for both initial support and long-term sustainability.

What's next for Bearcat Mindscape

Looking forward, we plan to expand our services by introducing new workshops and classes, such as AI-assisted art therapy sessions, or as we like to call it, "The AI Bob Ross." We will continue to refine our AI algorithms to enhance personalization and effectiveness based on user feedback and data insights. Strengthening research partnerships will allow us to explore new areas of study in AI, mental health, and biophilic design. We aim to open Bearcat Mindscape to the broader community to increase revenue and engagement and explore additional revenue streams like selling AI-powered soil and plant care kits. Ultimately, we envision scaling the Bearcat Mindscape model to other universities and wellness centers, promoting it as an innovative solution for mental health support through the fusion of technology and nature.
