Inspiration
Inspired by successful apps like Hevy and BeReal, which encourage capturing moments and fostering community through photo-sharing, and apps like Calm that offer wellbeing check-ins and meditation sessions.
What it does
BeeYou addresses the growing issue of social media addiction amongst the youth. Recognising that social media can’t be entirely removed due to its usefulness, BeeYou leverages popular features in a positive way to encourage users to engage in healthy, active habits. The app buzzes users with daily challenges focused on mindfulness and an active lifestyle, such as watching the sunset, going on a run, or journaling. These challenges are completed by taking and posting a photo in the app.
How we built it
We built BeeYou using Javascript for Backend, MongoDB for storing data and React to create the frontend and Node.js.
Challenges we ran into
Generating ideas for this problem statement was the most difficult as we had to ensure that the app remains engaging while promoting healthy habits for people in our age group. We needed to balance gamification with meaningful activities.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our final idea with bees, pollen collection and a hive is a very unique way to encourage mindfulness habits whilst including the social aspect. Collecting pollen points to customise your avatar and rank against a leaderboard also adds the gamified aspect that would draw in users.
What we learned
Diverse perspectives are important when creating a product catered to app users. We had to ensure that we were all agreeing with each other and on the same page.
What's next for BeeYou
Moving forward, we plan to expand our partnerships with more businesses to offer a wide range of rewards with collecting pollen.
