Our project, ReHarvest, is an online produce marketplace designed to reduce food waste by connecting farmers and suppliers directly with environmentally-conscious customers. We noticed that millions of kilograms of perfectly edible produce in Australia are discarded annually due to minor aesthetic imperfections. Recognising an opportunity, we aimed to create a practical solution addressing this issue while benefiting both farmers and consumers.
In developing ReHarvest, we identified key pain points: food wastage at farms, financial losses for suppliers, and a growing consumer demand for sustainable, affordable produce. Using a Django backend and React frontend with custom CSS, we rapidly prototyped a simple, intuitive platform allowing farmers to list produce easily and consumers to browse and securely purchase these products through Stripe integration.
Throughout the process, our team prioritised ease of use, rapid development, and responsiveness to real-world feedback. Despite challenges like managing real-time inventory data and ensuring seamless payment processes, we successfully delivered a functional prototype that demonstrates a scalable solution to a pressing environmental and economic issue.
