Inspiration
February is Black History Month.
Since Black people's accomplishments are often overlooked or appropriated by more privileged communities, we felt like it was important to remember and celebrate these artists and activists, and to remind the world of their contribution to society.
We decided to do that through a game that includes a few of them, to mix fun and activism.
What it does
It's a memory game, where you have to find the pairs of identical cards in a number of moves. After a game, you can read a bit about one of the persons included and their accomplishments.
How we built it
We created all of the art assets in Photoshop using royalty-free images.
Then, we used the game development platform Unity to create the game, using C# for scripts.
Challenges we ran into
Since none of us had used Unity before, we had to learn how to use the platform while trying to create a game.
Spending two days on 30 minutes of sleep is definitely something that pushes you to the edge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The art in the game is half of the reason we got this far. _ Who would want to let all of this beauty go to waste? _
And yet, incorporating intersectionality and activism was for us the most important part of this hack.
Being aware of how much social inequality exists in a field like tech, we had to take part in the betterment of hacking culture, and try to educate people on the necessity of intersectionality in every life experience, even something as trivial as a card game.
What's next for Blackcellence
For now, we have 12 playable cards, but we want to include more important people, and more people who marked history in a non Western context. We already have a list ready, we just need the time to create.
