Inspiration

Based on State Farm’s challenge statement, we were compelled to build this web application to unite people from different backgrounds and perspectives to encourage a more multifaceted view in our users. Limited by our surroundings, there is not a way that we can meet other people from varying backgrounds. In Blocc Party, we encourage inclusivity and connections among neighborhoods and communities. By joining Bloccs, users can learn about the different cultures and backgrounds within these groups and gain a better understanding of one another.

What it does

Blocc web app makes it easy to reach out to people in the neighborhood. Everyone can hold a party and invite neighbors. The web application will have different ‘bloccs’ that people can join or create a new one in case there is not a ‘blocc’ nearby. The main purpose of the Blocc Party is to unite surrounding communities through events such as birthday parties, playing cultural games, and celebrating festivals around the world. In this way, people are able to expand their horizon on the different people and cultures they get to meet, as well as have a new way to make friends and have fun!

How we built it

The application is built with React as the framework of client side. Bootstrap is used to make it responsive to different screen sizes. As for the server side, we built it with Node.js and Express.js. MongoDB is chosen in this project.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into is connecting front-end to back-end as well as securing the databases.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Some accomplishments that we’re proud of are the user interface designed to optimize the user experience, specifically the homepage. We are also proud of the sign in/create an account mechanism,

What we learned

We learned to become more familiar with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to help build this web-application.

What's next for Blocc

To combine with a recommendation system, which is associated with machine learning, using big data to suggest events to users based on factors like past activities, search history and demographic information.
