Cloudy Apples, SDG 3
Inspiration
Target 3.4 by the UN states that “By 2030, reduce by one-third premature mortality from noncommunicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being.” As recognised in the Sustainable Development Agenda, mental health is crucial to our well-being. Mental health affects how we think, feel, and act. Moreover, research shows that improved psychological well-being leads to better physical health.
Here at Terrarium, we want to develop an app to promote mental health by allowing the user to track their mood and to release and experience their emotions healthily. Thus, we created our app, Bloom Calendar.
What it does
Bloom Calendar centres around the theme of a garden with flowers, where each flower represents a specific emotion. For example, a sunflower represents happiness. Once users have logged into the app, they will select the emotion and its corresponding flower, called ‘bloomotion’, that best represents how they have been feeling that day. With each new day of inputting their moods, users will be able to add more bloomotions to their unique garden calendar, building a beautiful flower field. Hence, users have a greater incentive to open the app and input their moods.
Recording their moods at set intervals is a technique recommended by psychologists worldwide. It helps users identify patterns in their moods, to encourage them to make positive lifestyle changes. The app may even help some arrive at an accurate mental health diagnosis.
Furthermore, after the user has selected an emotion, they are brought to a new page. This page contains easy-to-read information on their current mood and tips on how to release their emotions. There are also step-by-step instructions and mini-games. As an example, if the user has selected ‘anxious’, they would be able to play calming music to soothe their nerves, and follow along with an animated breathing exercise.
Since Bloom Calendar requires users to identify what they are currently feeling, it helps them to learn to recognise their emotions. This way, they can avoid suppressing their emotions and can instead express them properly. Bloom Calendar teaches users healthy ways to express their emotions in a controlled manner.
How I built it
Our app was built using Powerapps. We included features such as a signup and login page to save the user’s data in their account, a back button for easier navigation, a button to access the app’s instructions, and music that the user can play. We also have other features unique to each emotion, such as an animated breathing exercise for anxiety, and an option to find and facetime friends for joy. Additionally, our app keeps a record of bloomotions previously documented, to provide the user with their personal bloom calendar. The user can click on a button on the home page to view this. To add a bloomotion to their garden, the user has to click on a button, thus increasing the engagement of our app.
What's next for Bloom Calendar
In the future, we plan to add more mini-games and exercises to help users manage their emotions. One example would be a colouring activity to reduce restless thoughts and generate mindfulness. Additionally, we will add different inspirational quotes for the user to read after choosing an emotion. This will provide users with something new and exciting after inputting their emotion. Another plan is to include more emotions for the user to select.
