Inspiration

Individuals are unreceptive to proper waste disposal, and are lazy towards recycling or calling waste management agencies. They prefer gathering all sorts of dirt, dumping them in gutters which then flows into the rivers, clots the drainage systems and causes flooding. Even though the internet contains almost all information about waste management agencies, they still lack the drive to search for recyclers. Our solution is centered on leveraging technology to influence the behavior of individuals towards the reuse of plastic products.

What it does

Bolster is an online platform that connects consumers to the nearest plastic waste recycler. Consumers indicate the pickup location and quantity of waste. Recyclers pay an amount of money in exchange for the waste. A badge reward system is used to promote the proper disposal of waste. By using this application, individuals become more receptive to collecting and sorting wastes, more recycling agencies will spring forth and less plastic wastes will be observed in our environment. We consider this solution the best, because everyone is involved in the circular plastic process either as a consumer or a recycler.

How we built it

The steps we took in developing the Bolster app are:

  1. Team Building
  2. Idea Generation
  3. Market Research
  4. Website Design and Prototyping
  5. Website Development

The team include Chidinma Oduenyi, Chioma Ukoha-Kalu, Paul Ehigie and John Achimugu.

Challenges we ran into

  • Building a unique solution
  • Frequent power outrages
  • Brainstorming
  • Gathering ideas and resources
  • Choosing the right colour code to fit our users
  • Numerous web designs to implement/develop

What's next for Bolster

Future Upgrades include:

  • Artificial Intelligence: To identify and predict the quantity of plastic wastes, and estimate the accrued cost
  • Payment Portal: To facilitate a cashless transaction between consumers and recyclers
