Inspiration

We were inspired by our love of nature and our desire to bring people together to transition back to normal social life after COVID-19.

What it does

Our project gives users daily tasks designed to motivate them to seek social interaction with family and members of their community. Users receive points for completing tasks that are used to grow their personal tree. When you complete all tasks for a given day, the tree will be fully grown. Users can also track their mood to keep track of their mental health.

How we built it

We split our project into React.js components and passed information between screens using state, props, and session storage. All art graphics were created using Procreate and Clip Studio Paint with animations being processed as GIF files. The graphics were then inserted and adjusted to the page layouts accordingly.

Challenges we ran into

We initially had very little experience using React, Javascript, HTML, and CSS, so passing data between components was initially challenging for us. We also had to learn all the languages and technologies we used as we went, which proved to be challenging but worthwhile. We also had many difficulties with background, animation insertions, and formatting inorder to align our website with our sketches.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

All four of our team members have never attended a hackathon before, so we are proud that we saw our project through to completion after around 20 hours of planning, coding, and executing. We are proud that despite struggling to learn and apply new languages in a few hours, we were able to create a product that we loved. Each of us also had specialized tasks that we could work on, making our collaboration process extremely smooth.

What we learned

We learned the basics of web development along with the general culture and proceedings of a hackathon. We also learned how to effectively collaborate over GitHub with a team and divide an ambitious project into smaller components that could be assigned to team members based on their strengths.

What's next for Branch Out

We plan on allowing users to input their own tasks for improved personalization and would love to make the graphics more personalizable. We would also like to add more built-in tasks and create a login system to support multiple users.

Our project will be showcased at the Hacklahoma Expo in DEH.
