Inspiration

We were inspired by UofT's general reputation of being full of lonely students, our own first year experiences of being unaware of events, and our general experience of falling into a mundane schedule of school. One of the main things students suffer from is a lack of connectivity to student life. Students fall into a routine of attending lectures, studying and repeating every day every week. The dull mundane existence of the student experience is something that has solidified U of T’s notorious reputation.

What it does

With our solution BreakBridger we propose to enhance student life by connecting them with tailored accessible student club events, activities, and opportunities around campus. This solution takes in students interests and preferences as well as their time table, and builds in different events around campus into their timetable. This enhances the saliency and accessibility of these events, promoting students to engage in student life opportunities that are meaningful and valuable to them! Each week their timetable will dynamically update to be tailored to the events of that specific week to ensure that students always get the opportunity to explore new and interesting events increasing the breadth of their university experience.

How we built it

We built this by scraping student events from the web, scraping the information from student schedules, and using ChatGPT API calls to pull events that would be tailored specifically to the user.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenges we faced were time. Working in a 6hour period was a large time crunch, and it was the first time any of us have ever used Amazon web services

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the the frontend, functionality and idea of our project.

What we learned

This hackathon was a number of our team mates first experience with working in a hackathon and working in a front end. Additionally, this was the first time we tried using AWS cloud based services.

What's next for BreakBridger

We are planning on proposing our project to the student teams we are a part of. If they are interested, we hope that they will participate in our project and have their events listed so students will be able to easily connect with them.
