Buddhy
💡 Inspiration
There are a lot of people struggling with small real-life problems—those problems that kind of ruin our days sometimes. When you feel too stressed, too anxious, or overwhelmed by something. I spent years in therapy and I found it very useful to overcome this. It gave me the tools to understand my emotions and my thoughts.
The real problem, though, is that you cannot have a therapist always available. It is expensive and you are subject to timetables. Problems, especially the smaller ones, are there at any time and they are plentiful.
That is why I created Buddhy.
Buddhy is an anchor, to have easy and fast support in those moments where you either can't have a conversation with a therapist or you don't want to have it with a friend. Buddhy is not a substitute; instead, it's a way to uncover those secret spaces that you might not be ready to talk about with a real human.
This is what I wanted. This is what I did.
🎯 What it does
Buddhy is an app that allows users to explore mindfulness topics through:
Guided Meditations – Beginner-ready meditations that let the listener follow a path towards a complete guided meditation, from relaxing, passing through the core section, to the end.
Journaling – A free writing technique to let the user write anything without worries about privacy.
Breathwork Exercises – Help users to relax in a fast and easy way, guiding them through the exercises.
AI Chat Support – An AI-based support chat for those users who want to have advice on their daily struggles.
🛠️ How we built it
Technology Stack:
- Framework: Flutter (mobile development)
- Backend: Firebase for backend infrastructure
- AI Core: Google Gemini AI powers the Buddhy chat
- Audio Production: ElevenLabs voices, edited with Audacity and custom Python scripts
I'm a senior mobile developer with 10+ years of experience, and Flutter is one of the frameworks that I used and loved most during my career. I'm using it every day for both personal and business projects. Firebase made the backend setup simple and efficient.
I spent days and nights learning the best way to train and use Google Gemini AI. Guided meditations have been created using ElevenLabs voices and edited using Audacity and custom Python code.
🚧 Challenges we ran into
Coding was the easy part. I vibe coded the app at first using Google Gemini AI, then I spent a lot of time refining all the details as I really wanted them to be.
The Main Challenge: Creating meditations for all the supported languages (English, Spanish, and Italian at this time).
- We created more than 150 meditations, going through them one by one
- Edited audio files and found the best way to generate them through ElevenLabs
- The biggest problem: generated audio files had the speaker going too fast, and sometimes we needed pauses between one sentence and another
I could not go through 150 audio files and add pauses manually—it would have taken ages. So I created a Python script to go through all of them and add pauses when they were too short.
It worked perfectly, and it made me very proud. ✨
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
The UI/UX Design
My team and I studied a lot of apps in the store to find the perfect match between elegant, useful, and easy-to-understand UI and UX. It took us a lot to decide how to make it simple and detailed at the same time.
The Buddhy Chat
I studied extensively to accomplish the goal of making it real, simple, and useful for users. Buddhy is a character that expresses a lot of personality as if it were a real human being. It understands:
- When to ask
- When to dig deeper
- When to stop
I use it a lot as a helping hand to discover myself more and more, and it's very useful.
📚 What we learned
We learned that working hard, spending days and nights listening to audio files, editing them and making them as we want them to be, coding consciously, finding the perfect design to express what we feel, having a common goal, and caring about what you do is something that nothing can pay for.
It was an amazing journey so far, and I hope it still will be.
🚀 What's next for Buddhy
Our Roadmap:
- ✅ Release all the meditations we created so far
- 📅 Add more meditations every month
- 📝 Add inspirational articles
- 🎵 Add more sounds and breathwork exercises
- 💬 Improve our design and meditations by getting feedback from our users
- 🌍 Expand by adding French and German meditations
We want to push it hard because we feel Buddhy is our creature and we care about it.
