💭 Inspiration

It is estimated that Australians throw out 2.7 million single-use or disposable coffee cups every single day. This adds up to 1 billion coffee cups thrown out every year. Its hard to imagine what a mountain of plastic cups would look like. And since these are not reusable, they end up in land fills and oceans, choking up the environment.

Our solution is simple: Bring Your Own Coffee Cups! BYOCC is an app that connects and rewards sustainable consumers and businesses.

The only way to encourage sustainability is by rewarding them with each time they make the right decision. The solution combines existing loyalty program solutions, where users get rewarded for bringing their own keep cups. This, we believe will prove beneficial for consumers, businesses and most importantly, the environment. Businesses can save on production and logistics in the long run by reducing customer dependence on plastic cups.

✨ What it does

BYOCC is an app that connects and rewards sustainable consumers and businesses.

  • It encourages consumers to bring their own reusable coffee cups when ordering coffee to go by rewarding them with free treats after buying a certain number of coffees with their cups.
  • Rewards: Collect a stamp every time you bring your own coffee cup and buy a coffee from a business with a BYOCC program. Once you've collected a certain number of stamps, you will be entitled to special rewards ranging from free muffins to exclusive discounts!
  • Rate and Review: Share your experience, rate businesses based on their environmental sustainability and discuss what else can the business do to improve.
  • Revenue: Customers aren't the only ones getting rewarded. Businesses also gain many benefits from creating programs and joining the app, namely by saving on production and logistics in the long run as well as gaining more customers through the app.
  • Reviving the planet: The landfill has had enough of single-use coffee cups. BYOCC's goal is to reduce the amount of single-use coffee cups being thrown and while doing so, addresses multiple Sustainable Development Goals, including
    • SDG11: Sustainable Cities and Communities,
    • SDG12: Responsible Consumption and Production,
    • SDG13: Climate Change, and
    • SDG17: Partnership for the Goals.

🎯 Challenges we ran into

  • CoMmuNicaTion: we had a few issues with miscommunication, especially with Discord chats being our primary form of contact.
  • Git Mayhem: we ran into quite a few annoying merge conflicts as well as other random git-related issues that were mildly frustrating to resolve.
  • deployment FAIL! FAIL! FAIL!: Due to some problematic logic, we couldn't unfortunately deploy it to any platform. However, we have outlined how to go about installing and and setting up the project on a local machine in the README.md

💪 Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Not too long ago, we had no idea each other existed on the planet and now we've made a cool app together! We are extremely proud to have been able to collaborate with (basically) total strangers and birth an amazing full-stack app out of this experience.

⛳️What's next for BYOCC

  • Port to mobile app and deploy it!
  • Expand programs beyond coffee cups and encourage BYO containers, cutlery, etc. to reduce other single-use plastic waste in the environment
  • Create an additional app/account for businesses to keep track of their loyalty customers as well as manage their BYO programs
  • Use barcodes or QR codes instead of entering unique code for buying coffee Refine business reviewing system (allow users to edit or delete reviews and add pictures)
