Inspiration

The oncoming of COVID-19 and quarantine was the main source of inspiration for CaloCount. Many people have taken advantage of quarantine to lose weight, gain muscle, or at least maintain their current state. CaloCount helps them achieve their goal by informing them of their recommended calorie intake according to their goal.

What it does

This project calculates the amount of calories and water one needs to intake based on his/her height, weight, age, and amount of exercise. It also includes many nutrional and hydration tips as well as an interactive map.

How we built it

We used Qoom as the serving hosting platform. We created a survey and then calculated the results. There are many more additional features like the maps and extra hyperlinks for the importance of balance diets and water that we had to add. We used HTML, CSS, and a lot of Javascript.

Challenges we ran into

We all had little to no experience with HTML, CSS, and Javascript, which was of course, a big problem for us. As a result, we ran into a lot of errors, even after research. However, we managed to figure them all out with the help of many online resources. Another big problem was the design of the website. None of us were particularly artistic or experienced with website design, but through the extensive experimentations and a couple tutorials, the website was turned into something respectable. Thankfully with the various tutorials on the Qoom website as well as some other online resources, we were able to add a bit of life into our website.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Prior to this hackathon, we barely knew any front-end programming languages at all (HTML, CSS, Javascript). We had to learn it all on the fly so considering that, the website turned out nice. Even with our limited knowledge in the field, we problem solved and made a cool application.

What we learned

As mentioned before, through making this project, we all got to become more familiar with HTML, CSS, and Javascript. In addition to just simply the syntax, we learned a lot of programming and starter tricks that could save us much time, next time.

What's next for CaloCount

This project could better be turned into an app from here as it would be more applicable to more people. Once Qoom allows it, adding in server-side features through back-end APIs would also be a huge improvement. There is also more work that could be put in to style it better.
