Inspiration

We came up with the idea for CampusAR because we know how big a campus can be and how hard it would be to navigate through certain buildings, especially those that you don't normally visit. We also wanted to make it easier and more fun for students and visitors to explore their college campus. Using Augmented Reality (AR), we aimed to create an interactive tour experience that not only helps users find their way but also helps them navigate around campus and events.

What It Does

CampusAR is an AR-powered app that turns campus exploration into an immersive adventure! It shows self-guided tours that highlight important locations, and upcoming events, making it easy to not get lost. Plus, it also offers small info about each spot, so users can learn more and feel more connected to their campus. However, to make it more simplier for this event, we wanted to map out the local area to the registration booth for ColorStack!

How We Built It

We designed CampusAR using Figma and developed it through Swift and ARKit for iOS, combining these with Storyboard and SwiftUI to create a smooth and intuitive interface. By integrating location services and camera functionalities, we were hoping to place AR elements accurately in the real world. We also set up a backend system to manage content and user interactions, ensuring a cohesive experience.

Challenges We Ran Into

One of our biggest challenges was making sure that the elements stayed correctly positioned in a constantly changing campus environment. It was our first time working with SwiftUI and Xcode so we ran into a lot of software issues when integrating it with VSCode. We also had to navigate camera permissions and ensure our app worked well on the IOS. On top of that, merging AR features with a user-friendly design required a lot of refining.

Accomplishments We’re Proud Of

We’re really proud of creating the UI that makes campus tours more exciting. Overcoming the technical hurdles and delivering a polished idea in a short amount of time was a huge achievement. Seeing our app bring familiar places to life through AR was incredibly rewarding for the team.

What We Learned

Working on CampusAR taught us a lot about AR development, from handling location-based services to designing intuitive user interfaces. We developed our skills in Swift, UI/UX design, and project management.

What’s Next for CampusAR

We’re excited to keep improving CampusAR! Our next steps include finishing up the location features like mapping, user-generated content, and support for multiple languages. We also want to eventually enhance AR tracking with the camera and object recognition for a more immersive experience. Beyond that, we hope to partner with our college to bring CampusAR to the offical bing students and visitors everywhere.
