CreateSC 2025 Write Up - “Capsul”
In today’s fast-paced digital world, we often document moments without truly preserving them. Photos pile up in our camera rolls, voice memos get buried, and the sentimental value of physical objects is lost. As a result, people struggle to form lasting emotional connections with their memories, and cannot revisit them in meaningful, intentional ways. This leads us to ask the question: How might we help people preserve their tangible experiences and combat forgotten memories in a way that fosters genuine emotional connection and nostalgia? Our Solution: Capsul is a digital time capsule app that transforms everyday media like photos, videos, voice memos, and 3D LiDAR scans of physical objects into multimodal memory capsules. These capsules are stored and delivered to your future self at meaningful or unexpected moments, creating space for authentic reflection and appreciation. By creating a user persona and conducting competitive analysis, we identified a strong emotional desire to slow down and reflect, and a gap in existing tools related to intentional, surprise-based memory recall. We designed Capsul to go beyond just photos. By integrating 3D LiDAR scans, users can preserve the tangible essence of physical objects, like a seashell from a beach trip or a concert ticket, and pair them with other types of media to tell a full story. Then, Capsules are sent to the user at randomized or milestone-based moments, helping memories resurface when they’re least expected but most appreciated, turning nostalgia into a gift from the past.
Capsul is a pocket of memorabilia, a quiet place for nostalgia on the go. It helps users find warmth in their past, grounding them in the present.
