Inspiration
The environment plays a significant role in supporting life on earth. But lately this very environment has faced adverse effects, damaging life and ecosystem on earth. We continue to see how our lifestyle has been a major factor in this damaging. One of them is the vehicles we use, and how the gases emitted by these very vehicles have harmed the environment to such a great extent. Therefore, we thought, why not try to do something that will help conserve the nature no matter how minimal that effort may be. So, we came up with this idea of checking the pollution levels of a car before buying a new one, so that, we can minimize this effect from our side as much as possible.
What it does
This website takes the model as input from the user, and displays its details such as, the vehicle class, type of transmission, fuel type, average fuel consumption (which includes both city fuel consumption and highway fuel consumption), the CO2 emission. And then accordingly it returns the CO2 rating and Smog rating, which indicates on the pollution level of a car. Along with that we provide alternate better options in the same brand for the users.
How we built it
We started the project from scratch. The first step was gathering resources for the project. We got the dataset required, then we had to analyze the dataset in order to be able to implement it in our project. After that came the step of making the frontend, most of which was done with the help HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery and Bootstrap to make it responsive. NodeJs, Express and Ajax were used for backend programming for connecting with the frontend.
Challenges we ran into
This was our first hackathon, so there were many challenges which we faced from the start. Like working together with a team with equal distribution of work, and because we had no prior experience, managing time was another issue that we faced together. Aside from these factors, there were challenges in uniting the whole project together and making it a proper working project. Also, communication was quite a challenge with the teammates, because we had to connect with each other online.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We overcame the above-mentioned challenges, that too with good time management. We worked together in a team, where everyone was efficient and worked hard for the project, so the end result was awe-inspiring. Learning about backend in detail, connecting server and deployment of the project was something new for us, which we did successfully, so it was a great accomplishment for us.
What we learned
Time management is something that we will eventually learn, but through this event we got some idea on how to prioritize the work to manage time. We learned how to work under pressure. Team work was also an important lesson through this. We learned how to analyze the expertise of each other, we learned many new technical concepts while working with each other. Along with that, we got to know a lot from each other’s experience. Patience and calmness are the key in such a pressure inducing situation, believe in ourselves and backing each other is very important and that is what helped and motivated us to keep on working on the project and not losing hope against the fear of failure.
What's next for CARbo
Participating in this hackathon boosted the confidence in our team. Now, we feel strong enough to compete and go for such more challenges and face them fearlessly. And hopefully our future road is embarked with much more achievements.
