Carbon Score

Like credit score in the USA, social score in China, we are proposing Carbon score to help each individual track their carbon footprints, provide incentives for using low carbon emission products.

Inspiration

Countries like the USA, China have a credit score, social scores to track finances, behavior/loyalty towards their country, similarly we are proposing a Carbon score to track each citizen carbon footprints. Provide incentives for using low carbon, eco-friendly products.

What it does

It tracks each individual's carbon footprint and the products he or she chooses that contribute to overall carbon emissions. Each individual is assigned a unique Carbon Id (similar to an SSN), which enables them to make more informed and responsible purchasing decisions. As a reward system, our platform rewards those who use eco-friendly products and leave a smaller carbon footprint. Each purchase earns the user points, which can be redeemed for gift cards.

How we built it

It's developed by leveraging Web Development technologies(MERN stack) i.e MongoDB as database, Express, Node on the backend, and React.js as the front-end framework. Also, to study the user spending behavior and reading uploaded bills/receipts to earn points, it utilizes machine learning algorithms such as Natural Language Processing and Computer Vision. For deployment purposes, the website uses Google Cloud Platform(GCP).

Challenges we ran into

  1. Integrate front-end web app with backend.
  2. Integrate machine learning models(NLP, and CV) with the backend as well as frontend website.
  3. Thinking about the creative idea of a Carbon score similar to a credit score in the USA, or social behavior score in China.
  4. Scalability and future scope.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Deliver end-to-end functional software that could be extremely useful to reduce the carbon footprints on micro and macro levels. Within 36 hours, our team brainstormed on challenging project ideas, functionalities, and feasibility.

What we learned

  1. Critical, and logical thinking.
  2. Technical skills: Web Development, Machine Learning, Google Cloud Platform Deployment.

What's next for Carbon Score

  1. Connect it with Social Media to encourage more users to follow the noble cause, become well-informed and responsible global citizens.
  2. Integrate, and introduce government welfare schemes such as tax benefits on low Carbon score, or other incentives to motivate its citizens and promote eco-friendly well-being.
  3. Scale it further using Google Cloud Platform(GCP).
