CarbonTree

Inspiration

We got inspired in making the awareness of the importance of tracing the carbon footprint of the products that we consume. Having this in mind, we made research on the topic and found interesting articles affirming that products that show traceability of their sustainable impact demonstrate growth of 46%, compared to the products that don't show this information.

What it does

We offer a service to broadcast the sustainable impact of each product of the brands, utilizing data from SAP product footprint management. In addition, each brand can add a link in their website to redirect their customers to our platform, where they'll be able to understand the carbon footprint journey of the product. Also, customers can track their carbon footprints and they can earn points that can be set to offset their points in sustainable projects.

How I built it

We initially brsinstormed the problem at hand by looking at the different aspects that the framework defined by the challenge had to offer. After agreeing to an initial concept of what we want to build, we divided the tasks that were mainly consisting of research, prototyping and coding implementation. The process was reiterated at different phases until we reached a result that we were satisfied with.

Challenges I ran into

We challenged settling the platform that benefits both, brands and customers. From the brand point of view, we know that they want to have a good image on the sustainability, but that is not their core message. From the customer's point of view, we want to encourage their contribution to the purchases they make.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We were able to build the bridge between the brands and customers, where both are benefited. Brands are motivated to research and show their carbon footprint, and customers are motivated to reduce their carbon footprint through the tracking of their purchases.

What I learned

I learned that we can utilize leverage big data to increase brand awareness.

What's next for CarbonTree

We can collaborate with other platforms to integrate our CarbonTree points. So that if there is a transaction, the customer can track their carbon footprint seamlessly.
