What it does

Using Open Banking products our proposal enables users to link their bank accounts to automatically calculate how much they can afford to donate monthly based on their transaction history. Using variable recurring payments a percentage of affordable donation amount can be set up to donate to selected charities. This affordable donation amount will be variable to accommodate fluctuations of transactions in each period without the risk of causing overdrafts. This provides users with a central place to safely make and manage donations without the risk of paying more than they can afford.

How we built it

Initially we got together as a group and brainstormed ideas for the project. Once the idea was created, we worked together to story board user journeys. To deliver on this hackathon we split into two teams, one to build the front-end web application and the other the back end. We spent three days on the project.

Challenges we ran into

Starting this project our members speciality was back-end development and so learning the intricacies of front-end development along the way was interesting. Of note we learned to overcome CORS issues, building redirection functionality and resolving self-signed certificate issues.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

With a small team we have been proud of creating a working proof-of-concept. We feel it encapsulates our vision and was a good learning experience, particularly due to working in areas we have not had exposure to before.

What we learned

Through the project we have learned about the open banking ecosystem, in particular the opportunities which variable recurring payments offer over traditional direct debit approaches. We also came away with hands on experience of building and deploying a front-end application from scratch.
