Inspiration
Our main inspiration came from our experience dining and shopping with friends, taking a picture of the bill to split later, then forgetting it. We aimed to redesigned the user experience surrounding this mundane task and transform it into a fun activity users wouldn't postpone.
What it does
CheqMate is a bill-splitting website that takes in the information of meals/items you purchased together and splits it equally between all users. Taking into account tax and tips specific to our experience as Ontario residents. Once items are inputed, users an chose a profile and select which items they consumed, therefore generating an itemized list that updates to show who has paid and who hasn't. Ultimately, the goal is to encourage all users to pay their bills on time, and lessen the burden of keeping track with user finances.
How we built it
Initially, formstorming and research was conducted to explore our ideas. Following this, the initial design was mocked up on Figma, creating several iterations before settling on a final design completed with frames and auto-layout. Once completed, the frames were imported into Figma-Make and prompted to create the user experience we envisioned.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge in completing this project was refining the design within Figma Make, as it is incredibly sensitive to wording of the prompts as well as interpreting designs without proper sizing or auto-layout. This was overcome through experimentation and ideation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Key features we focused on when designing this website are:
- Error Prevention (Buttons can't be pressed if input fields are not filled)
- Visibility of system status (Users can see who as paid, who hasn't)
- Friendly, minimalist, consistent design
- User Freedom (Ability to go back, edit changes, and cancel mistakes)
- Creating something fun to use!
What we learned
This experience has taught us a lot about Figma Make features and about intuitive design choices in planning our project.
What's next for CheqMate
In the future we'd love to create a responsive mobile version of this website and enable link sharing between friends.
