The website leverages OpenAQ for air quality data, OpenWeatherMap for weather insights, and Google Maps API for transit route optimization. Carbon Interface estimates carbon savings from eco-friendly choices, while Google Sign-In API simplifies user authentication and login. These services combine to create a dynamic, real-time platform that engages users in making better choices for themselves and their communities.

Key Features

Citizens can instantly report local issues—such as potholes, broken traffic lights, or uncollected trash—by using geotagged forms and uploading photos. To support greener travel, the Green Transit Helper offers low-emission route suggestions like biking, walking, or taking the metro, using live map data from Google Maps API to help users reduce their carbon footprint. The Live Environmental Monitor provides real-time heat maps showing air quality (from OpenAQ), UV index, and temperature (from OpenWeatherMap), powered by open city APIs to aid public health awareness and decision-making. A built-in Civic Points System rewards users for submitting reports, logging eco-friendly trips, and participating in community engagement, with points unlocking badges, leaderboards, and potential city rewards. All of this activity is tracked through a Personal Dashboard, where users can view their overall environmental impact, including the issues they’ve reported, emissions they’ve helped reduce (with calculations from Carbon Interface), and areas they’ve contributed to improving.

Additionally, a Local Spotlight section showcases top contributors and highlights impactful neighborhood initiatives.

  2. Report an Issue Page The Report an Issue page provides a streamlined interface for citizens to report local problems quickly and efficiently. Users can upload a photo, choose an issue category, and pinpoint the exact location on a map using Google Maps API. For added convenience on mobile devices, the location can be automatically filled using GPS. An optional “Urgency Level” setting allows users to indicate the severity of the issue, helping city officials prioritize their response.

Transit Helper Page The Transit Helper page assists citizens in making greener transportation choices by suggesting sustainable travel routes and estimating the CO₂ impact of each option using Carbon Interface. Users can compare different modes of travel—including walking, cycling, public transportation, and driving—to find the most eco-friendly and efficient route. The page also displays live traffic updates, transit delays, and weather conditions from OpenWeatherMap to help users plan their commute more effectively.

  5. My Impact Dashboard The My Impact Dashboard offers a gamified summary of each user’s civic engagement. It displays a running tally of “Civic Points” along with the badges the user has earned. Users can also view detailed statistics, including the number of reports they’ve submitted, the issues that have been resolved, and the amount of CO₂ emissions they’ve helped save, powered by Carbon Interface. A dynamic leaderboard highlights how users rank within their neighborhood and across the entire city.

  6. Account Details Page Users can manage their personal information and privacy settings on the Account Details page. Authentication is streamlined through Google Sign-In, ensuring secure access and a frictionless login experience across devices.

User Flow

Civix is designed to make civic participation effortless and rewarding: A user visits the site and is welcomed by the Home Page, where they can quickly take action—such as reporting a pothole or finding a low-emission transit route. On the Report Page, they fill out a brief form, upload a photo, and tag the location of the issue using the embedded Google Maps API. Once submitted, the report appears on a public map and is logged in their personal Impact Dashboard. Next, they head to the Transit Helper to discover a greener route to their destination, viewing real-time estimates of CO₂ emissions saved with Carbon Interface. Curious about current environmental conditions, they navigate to the Environmental Monitor, where live air quality index (AQI) data from OpenAQ, and weather data from OpenWeatherMap, keep them informed. They finish their visit by checking the Impact Dashboard, where they can track the number of issues they've reported, the total CO₂ they've helped avoid, and their ranking within the Civix community. For secure and personalized access, users can manage their profiles and settings via the Account Details page powered by Google Sign-In.
