Join Anson the Scholar (named after our friend Anson Wong https://devpost.com/ansonwong250) as he inspired us due to his lifelong love for learning) on an educational adventure to learn about how climate change is affecting the animals on our planet.
Inspiration 💡
We were inspired to create a game dedicated to increasing awareness about how climate change causes the livelihoods of animals to deteriorate as we are all animal enthusiasts! As proud pet owners ourselves and frequenters of the Toronto Zoo, we want to ensure that during mankind’s battle against climate change, the preservation of animals does not become a forgotten step on the way!
What it does 🎮
The Climate Chronicle is a story revolving around a scholar named Anson and his encounters with wildlife creatures whose existence is being threatened by climate change! It aims to teach players about the adverse effects that climate change both directly and indirectly causes!
How we built it 🔨
We created the game using the Unity3D engine, with any environment and player behavior being scripted in C#.
We also ensured that the visuals adhered to a cartoon-ish and light-hearted theme as we want this game to be appropriate for all ages!
Challenges we ran into 🚩
Creating a small game in such a short amount of time was definitely challenging, and we found ourselves being pressed for time, especially when we needed to test the triggers in our game when polishing it! We also ran into problems when finding out information about the animals and how climate change affected them, as our sources sometimes gave us conflicting information, so we would need to check multiple sources to get the most accurate info.
Accomplishments that we're proud of ⭐
We are glad that we created a game that can inform others about the predicament that many animals are facing, and we are sure that it will inspire others to take the well-being of animals in general into consideration when considering any future choices, even if it is not climate change related!
What we learned 📚
We learned many skills from each other as well as online tutorials, and we were able to collaborate and teach each other our skills during our meetings. We can definitely say that we are walking out of this hackathon with a much stronger understand of both C# and the Unity3D engine, on top of how climate change is adversely affecting animals around the globe.
What's next for Climate Chronicle 🚀
The next step for Climate Chronicle would be to add additional biomes and animals in order to teach players how other environments are affected by climate change.
