What it does

Colour Splash is a fast-paced 2D platformer with just a single level. Before you begin, you must choose a selection of colours to form your unique colour palette. Each colour chosen then affects the level in some way, such as by granting you an extra ability, or altering the enemy types present. Players can choose colours that best suit their abilities as they aim to find the palette that helps them beat the level in as fast a time as possible.

Inspiration

The main inspirations for the game were SpeedRunners and Ultimate Chicken Horse, since both of these focus on a single level being repeated over and over. In SpeedRunners, this involves learning and mastering the structure of a level as you replay it, and Ultimate Chicken Horse features levels that change as new features and obstacles are added, forcing you to adapt to these changes. Both of these ideas are core features of the Colour Splash game.

How we built it

The game was developed in the Godot Engine, using GDScript. Art was created in Clip Studio Paint, and the music was produced in BandLab.

Challenges we ran into

Using Godot itself was quite challenging. Game development in general is very different from software engineering. Not only do you have to learn how program in the engine, you also have to learn the development environment to locate which buttons are where and how it all links together.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Understanding Godot enough to get the colour selection screen working was a huge achievement!

What's next for Colour Splash

We would love to add more colours to the game to increase the number of palette combinations and thus give the players even more ways to customise and play!
