🤔 Inspiration

Every UTD student gets handed a degree plan on day one. And then... they're on their own. Nobody tells you which clubs actually get you hired. Nobody tells you that skipping ACM your freshman year costs you a referral three years later. Nobody tells you that the internship deadline passed two weeks ago. 1 in 3 UTD students graduate without a single internship. Not because they weren't talented, but because nobody showed them the path. CometPath was born to fix that.

🤕 Problem

College is supposed to prepare you for a career. But between picking classes, building skills, joining clubs, applying for internships, and figuring out what you even want to do, it's overwhelming. UTD has a degree planner. It tells you what classes to take to graduate. That's it. It won't tell you what to build. What to join. What to learn. Or how to actually land the job you want. Too bad there isn't a tool that knows your major, your goals, your skill gaps, and your timeline, and builds a personalized roadmap just for you...

🧱 How i built it

Front-end: Next.js 14, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS with a dark space theme built to match the Nebula Labs aesthetic. Every page has a first-time AI popup greeting you by name. Back-end: Next.js API routes, MongoDB Atlas for student profiles and chat history, Nebula Labs API for real UTD course and calendar data. AI: Google Gemini for personalized roadmap generation, advisor chat, club matching, and opportunity curation with YouTube and resource links baked into every response for the Dallas AI track. Voice: ElevenLabs STT + TTS so you can literally talk to your advisor. Rachel (Nova) speaks back in real time. IDE: Built entirely solo using Google Antigravity + Claude Code CLI in 24 hours.

🚧 Challenges I ran into

Building CometPath solo in 24 hours meant every obstacle hit twice as hard. Gemini's free tier ran out mid-build. ElevenLabs credits disappeared faster than expected. The Nebula API had undocumented quirks that took hours to untangle. I had to engineer a multi-model fallback system, optimize every API call, and still make it look polished enough for judges at 3am. The hardest part wasn't the code. It was making something that felt genuinely useful, not just technically impressive.

💡 Accomplishments I'm proud of

UTD's advising system has been broken for years. Students fall through the cracks every semester. I built something that actually fights back. In 24 hours, CometPath went from an idea to a full-stack AI advisor with real UTD data, voice interaction, personalized roadmaps, and a skill gap engine, all tailored specifically to Comets. That's something I can be genuinely proud of.

🤯 What I learned

Real campus data makes AI feel 10x more useful. Generic advice is noise. Specific advice is signal. Voice UI is underrated. When Nova speaks your name and your plan out loud, it hits differently. Solo building is humbling. Every decision is yours. Every bug is yours. Every win is yours too. The best hackathon projects solve a problem you've personally felt. I'm a UTD student. This one was personal.
