How can we work together to protect the environment if we don't even know where to start? Community tree helps digitally connect communities to preserve their natural environments in our online world.
Inspiration: I was inspired by the increasing stress we place on our natural environment, and the increasing effects of climate change that we experience as a result. The theme of the Wild West inspired me because it is often associated with harsh, almost unlivable climates, which are increasing due to climate change.
What it does: The project is an app called CommunityTree, which is a discussion board/forum where users can join their local communities, post about environmental conservation projects they are leading, join or donate to other local projects, view trending projects, and generate project ideas.
How we built it: I built this app using Matlab app designer, which I had no prior experience with, so it was fun to learn!
Challenges we ran into: It was difficult to learn the basics of Matlab as well as how to implement the functions I wanted to implement in such a short time frame. I had to learn and make mistakes with many features, such as buttons, listbox, and random number generator. There were more features that I wanted to add, but wasn't able to due to the time constraints.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: I'm proud of how much I was able to learn and figure out in the time frame, because a lot of these functions/features did not have tutorials online, so I had to build upon my own knowledge a lot. I'm proud of the features I did learn how to implement, such as displaying text output based on a random number generator, changing text display based on listbox input, and changing image based on listbox input.
What we learned: I learned a lot about hackathons, matlab, and my abilities. I feel a lot more confident about participating in future hackathons after accomplish more than I thought I would for my first one. It was interesting to learn how to design an app using matlab, as its interface is very different from any other language I have seen before.
What's next for Untitled: I plan to continue learning about app design and GUI in multiple languages, and hope to develop many more skills for my next hackathon so I can create more complex projects in the future.
Matlab award category: I used matlab app designer exclusively for my app for this project. I believe I should win this category as I learned everything about matlab during this hackathon only, and I was able to figure out and combine many features to create my app. I believe that I created a thorough and well-designed app using matlab, given the time constraints, and I hope to win this award category.
