Inspiration
We were inspired by things we share in common; one of them was that, as children, we all invented secret languages to communicate with our stuffed toys in languages only we could understand. Yet those languages eventually faded, almost as if they had never existed. This project is our way of bridging that childhood regret with computer science. What excites us about technology is exactly this: its ability to turn the impossible into reality and to give people true agency and creative power in their lives. Making it public is also our goal because we believe that users can preserve their special memories in terms of language. Friends, families, or colleagues can share their own language, which strengthens the social connections.
What it does
Our project is a Constructed Language (Conlang) Creator that allows users to create their own personalized language, complete with unique writing style, tone, grammar, etc.
How we built it
The website was developed in Visual Studio Code with GitHub Copilot AI assisting us in connecting Google’s Gemini model with our code to generate new languages. Particularly, we used Gemini API to link the frontend and backend, ensuring a smooth experience for users.
Challenges we ran into
We were challenged to find an appropriate tool to create this website, and later on we were stuck on using API key. Lastly, we were challenged to make the URL go public on GitHub.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It is the first computer science project for all of us who had little to no coding experience before Hacking. Besides, solving the problems we ran into also made us proud, which really gave us a lot of insights and enhanced our understanding of the industry as well.
What we learnt
We learnt about different types of tools to create things, and in particular, we practiced the API. We learnt to use Gemini API to connect the frontend and backend. Interestingly, to be mentioned, we also tried the Figma UI to design our page, but later on we found it more efficient to use GitHub Copilot to design the website.
What's next for Conlang Creator
We will try to add the audio teaching. But this is just as a reference; we still want to encourage users to think of their unique pronunciation. We also want to encourage our friends and family to try this website and collect advice from them.
