💡 Inspiration

Consumer behavior is the primary driver of environmental change, yet the true "cost" of our purchases—specifically their carbon footprint—remains invisible at the checkout counter. Costco2 was born from the desire to bridge this gap. Inspired by the need for radical transparency in the food supply chain, we wanted to transform the abstract concept of "carbon emissions" into a tangible metric that any shopper can understand and manage. By assigning a "price tag" to the planetary impact of our groceries, we empower users to make choices that align with their values and the Earth's limits.

🎯 Concept

Costco2 is a holistic ecosystem designed to integrate environmental accountability into the digital shopping experience. Its core concept revolves around the "Carbon Budget"—a personalized allowance that encourages users to shop within sustainable boundaries. Unlike traditional carbon calculators that provide data after the fact, Costco2 provides real-time feedback, allowing for immediate course correction during the shopping process.

🛠️ What it Does

  • Real-Time Carbon Pricing: Dynamically calculates the carbon cost of items based on their production impact and the logistics of getting them to your door.
  • Smart Budgeting: Users set a carbon "budget" (visualized via an intuitive dashboard gauge) to track their cumulative environmental spending.
  • Emissions Tracking: Integrates production data (CO2 equivalents for various foods) with shipping distances calculated via Google Maps to provide a precise footprint.
  • Seamless Integration: A lightweight Chrome extension that overlays critical data directly onto your browser, making sustainability a natural part of the workflow.

🏗️ How We Built It

The architecture of Costco2 is built on a robust, multi-tier stack:

  • Frontend: A Chrome Extension developed with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, featuring a dynamic SVG-based budget gauge for visual storytelling.
  • Backend API: A Flask-based Python server that handles the heavy lifting, including complex emission calculations.
  • Data & Insights:
    • Google Maps API: Used to calculate the real-world distance between retailers and the user's home address.
    • Firebase: Provides a scalable database solution for storing user preferences, budgets, and historical spending.
    • Custom Scrapers: Targeted data collection to map food items to their respective carbon emission values.

🚀 Challenges & Accomplishments

  • Complex Modeling: Developing an accurate formula that combines production CO2e with dynamic shipping distances was a significant hurdle.
  • UX Design: Distilling complex climate data into a simple "budget" metaphor required multiple iterations to ensure it was both informative and non-overwhelming.
  • Cross-Platform Synergy: We are proud of the seamless communication between the browser extension and the backend infrastructure, resulting in a low-latency user experience.

🔮 What's Next for Costco2

We are just scratching the surface. Future iterations of Costco2 will include:

  • Expanded Retailer Support: Deepening the integration with major retailers beyond our initial pilot.
  • Enhanced Data Fidelity: Incorporating more granular data points, such as seasonal variations in agricultural emissions and packaging types.
  • Community features: Allowing users to compare their "Sustainable Shopping Streaks" and share tips for low-impact living.
