What is the problem your solution addresses?
There is large confusion about what items are recyclable, where to recycle items, and how to properly clean items for recycling. This is seen among homeowners, local citizens, and those not as educated on the issue. In addition, there is a lack of convenience when it comes to recycling items, which has led to a mass amount of waste and improper disposal. It is common for people to dispose of recyclable items in the trash, simply because it is more convenient for them, rather than finding a recycling bin. Properly cleaning, sorting, and disposing of recyclable items is also a time-consuming activity; one that most people don’t want to do. CycleBetter is our solution to resolving the confusion surrounding what can and cannot be recycled, and the lack of incentive to recycle, both of which have detrimental effects on the environment.
Why did you pick this solution, and how does it address the problem?
CycleBetter aims to reduce confusion around the process of recycling and provide a platform which motivates people to properly recycle items. With each item scanned and recycled, users will earn points that can be redeemed in exchange for rewards. This system provides an incentive for people to recycle items. In today’s society, it is not not enough to simply tell people the importance of doing certain things; incentives help motivate people into doing actions. Our map feature shows nearby recycling centers, which solves the problem of people not knowing where to recycle certain items. CycleBetter meets our mission to advocate for sustainable actions and change regarding the problem of recycling.
