With many large AI data centers being commissioned, local communities often face decisions where citizens and corporations have opposing interests. Citizens frequently lack technical knowledge, and our goal is to help them become more informed and educated about the potential impacts in their area.
DataDemand shows how a local hyperscaler could affect your utility bills and housing prices by analyzing prior data from similar developments. It helps residents visualize the tangible effects of new AI data centers on their communities.
We used datasets from corporations and government sources, including historical utility usage and pricing, and cross-referenced them with locations and timelines of hyperscaler announcements and construction. This allowed us to model potential impacts on electricity, water, and housing costs.
Historical utility data is often scarce and not publicly available, which led to underfitting in our models. Gathering accurate, long-term data proved to be a significant challenge.
We wish to expand our dataset for greater accuracy and add more predictive features, including potential impacts on air quality, soil quality, local traffic, and other environmental and economic factors. This will give residents a more comprehensive view of how AI data centers affect their communities.
We are proud to provide a tool that helps residents better understand what new AI data centers could mean for their communities. Our hope is that voters can make more informed, data-driven decisions in an era where misinformation is common.
